wrangler pre-owner questions

Before I buy a wrangler, I have a few questions first:

1. How does the soft top handle against rain and snow?

2. Security? I know that the hood opens from the outside and with a soft top it could be easily broken into.

3. Overall reliability? I would mostly be driving around town/highways with the occasional offroad.

4. MPG's? I want the six cylinder.

5. Known problems? What should I watch out for?

The soft top can handle just about anything you can throw at it, and it keeps in more heat in winter than you'd think.

There is no true security.. take it with your or consider it stealable.

Reliability is like no other vehicle I've ever owned.. besides a volvo 240 I had, but I had to work on that thing a lot more than my Jeep.

MPG's is like security.. if you have to have good mileage.. get something else.. but it's worth it.

If you mean, while buying.. buy stock or close to it, and look out for rust.

I just bought a 99 Wrangler Sport 2 weeks ago, and after doing some research on the Forums, I deduced that:
If you want security with a soft top, get a GOOD (not stock) locking console (, and/or keep anything that invites break-ins hidden.

There are a few options for locking the hood.

MPG is minimally different between the 4cyl & 6 cyl. Neither is 'good gas mileage'. People don't buy Jeeps to save on gas money, they buy them because they're Jeeps.

When people build these things up with mods, they generally use them. Sometimes they abuse them. If you buy one that has already been built, be ready to replace whatever they wore out & decided to sell rather than fix.
(Good indications of this would be alot of deep gouges in the frame / skid plates, oil leaks, munched body, you know the drill.)

One thing that I kept seeing when I was shopping was quick disconnects up front. I walked away from each Jeep that had these, each one had other serious problems on closer inspection as well.

That being said, I AM still new to Jeeps. This forum is full of great, helpful, and friendly people, I'm sure you'll here from more soon!
Welcome to The Forum

The soft top can handle rain and snow and mud just fine. I bought my Jeep with a hard top, put the soft top on it after 3 months and never used the hard top again.

There is none. You could use a security system, but they usually don't do much good. Best advice: Leave it unlocked and don't keep anything of value in it.

It's a Jeep, you cannot get a much more reliable vehicle.

It's more like FPG (feet per gallon) jk. The mileage is terrible but that is not why you buy a Jeep. 6 cylinder won't make that much of a difference in mileage, but it will in performance.

This all depends on what model you are looking at and where you are looking. Just make sure that the 4WD is operational, check for DW and try to stay away from heavily modified Jeeps. I always advise buying as close to stock as you can get. Do your own mods so that you know that they are done properly and there are no surprises.
If it helps with your decision, it is rare that you will meet someone who regrets buying a Wrangler. You will find a lot who regret selling them.

I hope this helps
