Wrangler TJ Rear Differential Replacement

I have a 1997 Wrangler TJ and just blew out my rear differential (Dana 35). Does anyone know where I can find a replacement locally (northern VA area) or someplace that shipping would not be too expensive? This is my DD and money is really tight right now. I have checked CL, Ebay and a lot of local salvage yards with no luck. I truly appreciate any help that I can get. Thank you all in advance!

What broke, you may be able to do an inexpensive repair for now and save your money for a Dana 44 later.

I replaced my spider gears a few years ago when mine went for about $100, it was an easy repair.

The mechanic said that it was all chewed up inside the housing. He said that it could be rebuilt for around $950. I haven't had a chance to see it yet.

They show up on CL occasionally for about $200-$300, but then you also have to hope its the correct gearing that you have now.

Many will head towards getting a 8.8 as they can be setup for about $700 and they are very common and much stronger.

I found one on CL this morning. Someone has a 1998 TJ that was totaled in an accident and they are parting it out. It is a 2.5 w/Dana 35 rear (3.73 gearing) like mine so it should work. Keeping my fingers crossed . . .

The 2.5's with automatics came with 3.73's, so it's a good chance that axle wasn't abused. That's one easy bolt in replacement. Try to get the axle with the ebrake cables still installed. Makes it much easier and much less labor.

Most are trying to give away D35's, so I hope you are getting it for a good price. Keep your old axle shafts as spares and get pics of the parts your mechanic says is toast.

I just wanted to say thank you all for the responses. I did get the one from the 98 TJ that was on CL and am happy to say that it worked out. It only cost me a couple hundred dollars so now I am going to save up for a Dana 44.
