Wrangler Tj Tire question

I have a 2000 Tj wrangler that currently has 31' tires on it. I am doing some motor work to get it back up and running, but I would love to get some larger tires on it. However, my jeep is only a 4 cal, so I don't know if it will handle anything larger. I feel that since its a 4 cyl that anything larger will just drain the gas... and since this jeep will be used as my DD (at least when I am not riding my bicycle to offset gas prices) so I don't want to put larger tires on it if its going to suck down gas mileage. I would love to eventually upgrade to a larger motor then the 4 cyl to help spin the larger tires. I have seen a few forum posts on here about owners having 35's with their 4cyl and the gas mileage not being too terrible. Right now I have dana 30 front, dana 35 rear, ax 5 transmission and np231 transfer case , also running 4.10 gears.

I have the same set up as you on my '97. I run 33X12.50 Goodyear Duratracs and pull about 15 mpg.
