wrangler x axles

I have a 2004 X and ive got 35s on it with stock gears. i want to lower my gears but dont want to put in lockers or new chormally shafts yet as i cant afford them. how low can i go with stock axle shafts? i would like to go 4.56 or 4.88 but im afraid that will twist the stock shafts. any advices would be great. thank you.

I also have a 2004 Wrangler X. The limit for your D30 up front is 4.88. I am not sure about the D35 in the rear because I swapped in a D44.

That being said, I am sure you already have read all over the intardnet that:

35" tires on a stock D35 c clip axle is a ticking time bomb. It could explode at any time, killing women and children. lol

I personally would not spend the money to re-gear the D35, unless you are putting in a Superior Super 30 kit in at the same time.

If you have the auto tranny (42rle) in your '04 Jeep, the ideal gear ratio is 5.13.

I forgot to add the carrier break. I know on the D30, if you want to go lower than 3.73's (numerically higher gear ratio), you will need a new carrier. IE: if your Jeep came stock w/3.07's.

And again, I know nothing about the carrier break on the D35...cause I got rid of it.

Just didnt want any confusion since they actually do make a Super 30 kit...which may be a little tricky to install on the D35.

good info, so my manual X came with the standard 30/35 combo with 3.07 gears was thinking of going to 4.10 ratio, but seems like it would be easier and cheaper just to go up to 3.73 to avoid new carriers? I am only running 31s, but they are heavy and would like a little power back.

Do some shopping around. Your local junkyards or jeepers may have their old 30/35 combo laying around...you may be able to find 373 gears. If you can find some out of a 4 cylinder they may actually be 4.10 gears. In most cases finding a whole set of axles may be as much or cheaper than doing an actual gear swap.

And I think the carrier break for a 35 is 3.55 and up. 30 is 3.73 and up

I agree with con. You can prob pull an hp30 with 4.10 and a d 35 w/ 4.10, have stronger axles. And spend about 1/3 the money.

I'm running 4.56's in stock 30/35 combo from 3.07's. New carrier for rear is needed. Plus bearings etc...

I'm on 33's

this is great info. thanks....i forgot to mention the warrenty that came with it. i can only upgrade to parts that were offered from the factory inthat modle year or my warenty is void. so maybe i wrecking yard swap will work. ive got a 4 inch suspension lift and a 2 inch body lift that was on it when i got it. maybe i could get rid of the body lift and go down to 33s. and that would help me in getting the right gears set up without buying all new axles. any ideas?
