Wrecked my Jeep, Depressed.

Hello all from wet and windy England.

Slipped on a wet road on Saturday, and collided with a very robust brick wall.

Fortunately nobody was hurt, apart from me. Got the phone call today from the accident assessors. Write off, not economicaly viable.

The impact had bent the front axle, twisting the radius arm enough to sheer the welds off the axle.

OK, so I get paid out, but non of the jeeps for sale in Great Britian are my jeep.

Still, rest assured. There will be another TJ on my drive soon.

Your insurance sounds French... giving up at the first sign of difficulty. Tell them if they're so sure it's worthless, you'll take list price for it, and buy it back from them for scrap weight.

Over the pond here, blue book on a good condition TJ will be $7k to $15k depending on mileage. A front axle swap (bolt in, unless you also tore off the control arm mounts on the frame end) from another TJ with rear end damage would run you $300 - $600, maybe $1k if you had a shop do everything for you, including source the parts.

Tell the insurance company you'll give them $1k for it (after the write-off check), put $1k max into repairing it, and then spend the balance on upgrades or a vacation.

I agree with c.l. an axle swap is very feasable but how's the market for used jeep parts in england? I dont picture a huge jeep following there like here in the states

That is always an option, although I dont have too much time on my hands to facilitate repairs, long work hours and a young family.
My wife is of the opinion that I should get a different one and treat it like a blank canvas and start over.
There is a black '02 TJ Sport, 43000 miles and totally standard for £4999 that looks immaculate. Plus a few others.
I just need to make a decision really.

No, your quite right, used parts are as rare as hens teeth and probably cost as much as you pay for new.
Over here everyone has left overs, oh sorry, I mean Land Rovers.

It's really a shame.. Jeepers on this side of the pond would be able to get that back up and going again because of the aftermarket and used parts.
It's not uncommon to see a post of someone who smashed a fender or broke an axle on here. Most of the time is is an excuse for an upgrade!

See if you can get some take offs from the Egyptian military stuff. They ran ljs (i think) and shipping would prob be a bit less. Also, you could look at 4wd Cherokees for an axle swap on the cheap. Would only take an afternoon and I believe (according to top gear...ha) Cherokees had a bit more market share than other jeeps over there.

I've often wondered about that word "Jeepers" since I got mine a few years ago and found this forum.

I remember after buying it and driving home, the first Jeep I passed, didn't know of the wave, that the first thing I thought to myself was, "Wow! A fellow Jeepster!" I think Jeepster sounds much better than Jeeper.

Yes, that would be a relatively easy to find parts for and repair of your Jeep, over here.

Thanks for your replies, they are appreciated.

This is when I wish I was your side of the pond, especially with all the open areas to go wheeling.

Any jobs out there for a forty something proffesional falconer.

I should hear today what the are going to offer me, no doubt that will raise a giggle. If I was more mechanically minded then I would look into the fix it route, I'm ok on service stuff but as for body work and all that. I'm gonna ring up about the '02 TJ today. Only a soft top though, would be good to get both. Still on standard suspension and steel rims, that would have to change.

My mind is already starting to spend all my money, lift kit, alloys, MT tyres etc etc.

A 'torch' is indeed a flashlight. There's lots of these words meaning one thing in the US and something else in the UK. A 'fag' is a cigarette. A 'flat' is an apartment. Etc.

You'd think those Brits would learn to speak proper English .

So sorry to see your little Jeep in this condition. Good luck finding your next one.

I'ma tellin ya, if it was mine and I decided to let the insurance Company have it, I'd strip off lots of stuff first....Make sure to take your driving lights and bull bar plus whatever else extra on it including the hardtop....If they sqawk, if they really sqawk, then let em have the stuff, but odds are they won't.

"Jeepster" is a model name given to two Jeep models:
The Jeepster (model VJ), from 1949 - 1951, and the Jeepster Commando, model C101 from 1966 - 1971, and model C104 (bullnose) from 1972 - 1973.

Since "Jeepster" is a specific model name we don't use that as a moniker for those of us who operate Jeeps... we are Jeepers...

Your input would be most appreciated. I have shortlisted one or two that look appealling. I am trying to get one that is better than my old girl as I don't want to fall into the trap of constantly comparing.

First up, and possibly my favorite is this one;

2002 Jeep Wrangler 4.0L Sport

I like the idea of having a totally standard Jeep, therefore any modifications undertaken leave me the standard parts.
My last Jeep was a Sahara, and as far as I can see the only difference is trim and steel wheels. No biggy, as I would by a wheel and tyre deal and have two sets of wheels.

I also really like this one;

Although I am slightly concerned about the first gear rattle. No doubt some of you wil have ideas on this. I am going to call the owner today to discuss this further. It would be cool to have both hard and soft tops.

Although after having a conversation with the owner he was pushing for an immediate decision as he had a raft of people interested which immeidiately put me off.

There are a few heavily modified Jeeps available which go for over inflated prices and I'm dubious as to the quality of the work and how much abuse the vehicle has had.

All of your comments would be greatly appreciated. You could even search the UK and see if you can find better.

I recently bought a 2003 sport with 45k miles and no regrets. I'm about to makes some changes once all the parts arrive. I lived in England for a minute and loved it. Don't remember seeing many Wranglers. Good hunting and I hope you find what you want.

Well I think I've narrowed it down to the '02 Sport or the Shara with 93000 miles. Decisions decisions, decisions, would the 93000 miles worry you guys?

The '02 and the '00 both look solid. I'd lean towards the '00 myself; 93k miles (km? doesn't specify) is not a concern for the 4.0 I6 or ax-15 transmission, and it is easier/cheaper to start with a hard top and add soft top if desired than vice versa.

Run away from the 3rd one fast... 8 previous owners!? There's either a dead fish behind the dash, or some serious mechanical fault with that one.

4th guy sounds shady.

Woa, that looks a good hit, well done for fixing it.

Thanks chaps, after reading your replies I decided to buy the 2000 Sahara Hardtop with 93000 on the clock.

It was a no brainer really, the jeep had been dealer serviced at every seven thousand mile interval, no fail. Only the last two were not at jeep dealerships, or stealerships as we call them over here.

I got it for £4700, with a full years MOT. The insurance after a bit of haggling paid out at £5K on my 1999 Sahara, less my excess of £250 so all good.

Not bad given that I only paid £4200 for my '99 in august 2011. Jeeps really are going up in value over here.

I pick it up on the 31st of March, saturday week. Cant wait. I'll bombard you with piccies then. Already looking at lift kits for it, and I must find a soft top. That bowless one looks tempting.

Thanks for your advice, it really put my mind at rest.

As for your Question "Any work for a 40 something falconer?" Actually there is quite a bit of work over here in that line. Airports large and small are hiring them to help control birds around the runways. From my understanding pay is quite good. I don't know exactly how to locate that kind of job, it may take some work or hell you could start your own business. With Obama in office he would probably give a $500,000 grant to a non citizen to start a business. (He loves to give away our tax money)
