Sorry to revisit this topic, but I think I had my first "death wobble" on the highway today...
I was going about 60, maybe 65mph and all of a sudden the whole jeep was wobbling....I had the fear of losing control for a few seconds, but just let off the gas and let it slow down a little and then sped up into smooth riding again.
I guess my question would be, seeing as no mods have been made to the Jeep yet, no lift, no new tires, etc....is this an issue I need to have checked out? It has been raining the last few days so the roads are slick....I dunno if I can blame it on just that though after reading all about the infamous "death wobble" posts on here.
Guess the least I can do is maybe have the tires re-balanced? Anything else I should have checked? Keep in mind please that I know just about didly squat when it comes to the inner workings of cars, let alone Jeeps. I'm trying to learn more by reading all that I can here, but a lot of times it feels like i'm trying to read a Chinese dictionary.
you should prolly check and make sure all your bolts are tight...make sure nothing is loose and check your track bar...if theres anything else someone else that knows way more than me will post and let ya know lol
Need some more info. With no mods, it is quite possible that you have a bad tire on the front end. How many miles do you have on the Jeep, and how many miles on your tires? How long has it been since you rotated your tires? They need to be rotated and balanced between 3-5k, depending on softness, and tread pattern of your tires. If you have all that done, and still have the problem, you most likely have some bushings worn out, or that need to be tightened. Also check the connecting points of your sway bar, track bar, tie rods. Let us know what you find out.
well i just got it 2 weeks ago so i dont know much about the tires....it's an '03 sahara, 31K miles, factory everything as far as i was told by the family who i bought it from, i asked specifically if they made any mods and they said no.
i guess i could shoot them an email and ask how many miles are on the tires....according the the service records they gave me (which might be a little incomplete) the last tire rotation was at 19K miles.....
are you saying they should be balanced and rotated every 3-5K, as frequently as the oil change?
i did take it to a 'tires plus' to have it checked out before i bought it and he pointed out a couple of what he said were "minor" issues which were:
1) front rear differential is starting to seap from the pinion seal
2) recommend remove and replace stabilizer bar end link (something about a sway bar link kit)
3) recommend alignment service
I suppose I should have had these things done, but the thought of bringing it in for work after I just bought it was for some reason almost unthinkable, I just wanted to enjoy driving my new Jeep!!!
Anyway, does that stuff sound like a good place to start?
The alignment may fix your wobble. I would definitely have the tires balanced/rotated while it's in as well. As for the pinion seal leak, is it on the front axle or the rear? If it's on the front, it may already be worn enough to vibrate a little bit...

If you have to ask what it is or what it does, you don't need it, and you will need help to install it!
When they are worn out........lol. I could not resist. If they are the original tires, I am sure you would be better off buying you a new set. Just remember to take care of them. Balance and rotate at least every other oil change. That is based on changing your oil every 3,000 miles.
just found out from the original owner that they're the original tires, so theyve got 31K miles on them, when are the tires supposed to be replaced?
Let me guess- Goodyear GSA?? I have read a few times of these tires contributing to DW. MY 06 LJ had 46,000 on it when I bought it, DW at 55. New trackbar almost eliminated it, swapped the tires out, gone.
I think the GSA wear like iron, but eventually the internal structure breaks down on them and causes issues.
