YJ, TJ, JK, What do they mean?

Just curious (and I know what they say about the curious cat) can anyone tell me what the two-letter designations for the Jeep Wranglers mean, or what determines the difference in the models? I have a 2001 and never knew it was a TJ.

Ive asked the same question before, and everyone told me that it didn't mean anything. Then they all made their own interpretations of the initials.

I've been told "a confused customer is a good customer", and it looks like Chrysler sure has us confused. Bet they change to letters just to make us think we're getting something new and different from previous models so we'll keep trading for the newer ones.

Thanks for the explanations.

I know the slang term for YJ was Yuppie Jeep. I know it's not much help, just thought I'd throw it out there

Kidding aside these are the letters used in the VIN and do not mean anything.

Virtually all vehicle manufacturer's have a vehicle or chassis identifier code or designator.

Example my 89 Mustang was designated as the Fox body by Ford. There were several Fox vehicles vehicles including the Capri and Fairmont.

You guys are funny, just had my laughs for the day. One more, one of my friends who is not a Jeep owner tells me "Jeep" stands for "Jeep Emptys Everyones Pocket".

Good thing all us Jeep owners are good natured and don't worry about all the confusion over numbers/letters, we just enjoy our toy.

Absolutely right! And the product codes aren't just for Jeep, every product in the chrysler line has one. But The old CJ did stand for "Civilian Jeep" since these were civilian versions of the military jeeps
