YJ vs TJ Dana 35 differences

I have a 99 TJ with a Dana 35 stock rear end. A friend of mine has a 91 YJ that came stock with a Dana 35 rear end as well. He had purchased a powertrax locker for his jeep and tore up a drive shaft his first offroad outing. He has since replaced his rearend with a Ford 8.8. Long story short I was able to pick up a locker with less then a few hours on it real cheap. Problem....after assembling the first side, placing it on the axle and inserting the C-clip I am unable to pull the axle back. The outer diameter prevents it from fitting into the axle housing. My first clue should have been that the stock thrust washers did not fit the locker. So basically what I'm asking is should this locker fit? I am having trouble finding much info online. I appreciate the help.

Nevermind. According to a several online retailers, the two lockers are indeed different. I could not find any specifics on what. Oh well, so much for finding a "real cheap" locker. Wish I would have looked into that before digging into the differential. Lesson learned.

The better news is you didn't get that locker installed into your Dana 35c because the same thing that happened when that locker was in your friend's axle would have happened to you. A stock Dana 35c axle should never (!) be locked as its axle shafts are nowhere near strong enough for a locker. A locker can double the amount of torque sent through an individual axle shaft and the Dana 35c's axle shafts are not up to the added torque caused by the locker.

Im sorry but i run the D35 I know its not the strongest rear end hands down,but if you add the alloy axle it holds up fairly good.30 spline alloy axles,Ox locker has held up well for me running 35s.But I wished would of put the money I stuffed into the 35 and put it into a Rubi 44

Your Dana 35 is no longer stock, it will of course hold up to being locked with 30 spline alloy axle shafts that replace the OE carbon steel 27 spline axle shafts.
