I mainly don't like the reverse gear, pops out all the time. I feel like the synchronizer on it just isn't very good. A couple of my friends have the same problem with theirs. I guess I also prefer the gearing on the 5-speed. My 3rd gear synchronizer looks like it's going out right now too. And now various performance transmission and transfer case options are running through my head...yup, I drive a TJ

Naw, it's a fairly common problem. I've been driving stick for 7 years and thought I was just rusty or something when I got it.

It's like I can't get it all the way into reverse and then when I try to reverse it like grinds... I'm not mechanical so it's hard to explain.. Lol anyone think that some day they will come out with a HYBRED Jeep Wrangler.. That's a big wish for me

Yup, that's my main issue with it. I'm not too familiar with transmissions, but I'm positive it's the synchronizer. I'm hoping for a diesel wrangler.

After changing my upstream O2 sensor i am now averaging 15-16 mpg mixed city/highway. I was getting 12-13.

And my reverse is tricky too. It doesn't pop out, but can be a pain to engage.

Same here. Sometimes it won't go into reverse. I usually slowly let out the clutch while pushing it into reverse and that works.

You are driving down the interstate in car other then your Jeep and you pass two RV'S towing Jeeps and you honk your horn and wave as you pass them. (My wife thought I was crazy)

I've noticed that Jeeps show differences worse than other vehicles. If I don't use Shell gas, I chance loosing as much as 5mpg: I never had that with another vehicle (not that drastic). Take a look at all the factors then work towards mechanical issues. Tires, gearing, fuel, and height are some of the factors involved.

I'm running with a 4" lift, stock gears with a locker, 33x12.5 Mickey Thompson all weather tires, and a set of Warn lockout hubs; in the foothills of GA. With Shell gas, I average 16-17 in the city and have gotten as high as 21 on the highway.

This should be a good key for you to look at. If your running less, then you have mechanical issues. If your running much more, it may explain poor fuel milage; but maybe not 9. My semi truck gets 6, and there are some getting 8. I don't feel any street vehicle should get as bad as a semi truck which pulls 80,000lbs with 6 cylinder's the size of your thigh.

Wat does shell gas have to do with anything? Do they have better mpg formula fuel or something?

See that's the trick! The three speed is so awful that it actually gets better gas mileage the slower you go.

I know my friends will only go into reverse if you click it in first, first.

Some synchro safety driving thing-a-mabobber. That makes sure you don't go into reverse while driving. And ruin anything

A big factor in Jeep mpg is how you drive it. If you are intent on improving your mpg, DO NOT drive faster than 60 mph or so. Jeeps are horrible aerodynamically to start with, at speeds above 60, mpg will drop off drastically. I avg 17-19 (have the 2.5. that helps), but only when driving slow. I can go 100 miles down the road and easily get 19 mpg as long a I keep it at 60 or below, bump it up to 65+ and the mpg will drop to 13 or so. That is a 30% loss of mpg just by driving fast. It's a Jeep, slow down and enjoy the ride and you should improve your mpg a little without any further mods.

Racetrac has for me is one to avoid, always get lower mpgs when running Racetrac gas.
