your opinions and thoughts

I have found a 97 TJ for my 16yr old son. My question is should I buy this jeep it has 153,000 mi rebuilt transmision, replaced water pump, radiator and alternator. The owner claims the title has flood damage on it but in reality only the back of the jeep was saturated from a storm. He is asking $3500 for it should I consider looking at this jeep or should I continue to look elsewhere. And if I do go to check it out what are some of the things I should be looking for?

Thanks
HOPE TO BE A DAD OF A FUTURE JEEP OWNER SOON

i'm no jeep expert but the water damage wouldn't really bother me too much. most jeeps spend a lot of time in water. as far as the w/p, rad, and alt that's all normal wear and tear stuff. no worries there. $3500 bucks sounds reasonable to me. look/listen for the normal stuff when you drive it like worn/wobbly front susp, severe driveline vibrations, weird noises etc. make sure the 4wd works too. you don't have to be an expert to know if something doesn't feel right. good luck to you and your son happy trails!

Check for heavy rust on the frame and lift up the carpet and check for rust in the foot wells and in the bed. Test out 4wd hi and lo on a gravel or dirt road, take it to a mechanic you trust for a once over, etc. Your son is a lucky guy!

Thanks for the comments I was kind of thinking the same thing but It is always reassuring to hear it from other people what you may think you already know.

x what? 4 on the checking for rust... but also realize that age and that many miles it will have some...the question is the severity. IMO if it is the 4.0 that would be a good price, I am assuming that it is a auto tho? I think the sticks usually last longer than that.

My '04 has 151+ and I wouldn't take 10K for it. If you don't mind a little wrenching now and than sounds good to me.

x2 on that one! Especially if there was water in the tub. I went a whole year owning a 99 tj before pulling up the carpets and finding out there was a rotted out hole in the passenger floorboard because the previous owner left the drain plug out causing water from the road to just come right in.
