Red face 1987 Wrangler Questions

I found a possible Wrangler but I am having trouble getting pricing info for it. It is a 1987 Wrangler (YJ) With a 4.2 L engine, 5 speed manual, with a hard top and full doors. 126000 miles and the owner wants 3995.00. How does this sound as far a price for an 87? Any issues I shoud be worried about? Thank you all for your help.

being in VA it might not be nearly as rusted as some of ours up here in Michigan. I would look closely at the frame in the front and the back, just inside of the bumpers. They are notorious for rusting out. Start a list of everything you would want to fix as you walk around it, such as a scratch here, ding there, missing parts, new tires, don't be shy. List everything YOU would put on it. Then let him know, hey, this is a big list of fixes.

If you drive it home for $3,000 I think your doing great. With the hardtop, full doors and the 4.2, your getting a great start.

I about here...

Jeep 94' w/4.0 HO 130,000 miles - $3,000
Hardtop and full doors - $475
New tires - $430
New Computer - $230
Distributer cap/rotor/plugs & wires - $97
Fire extinguisher - $30
(had a couple tow straps) but I bought hooks and shackles for $40
New Rear bumper - $190
Speaker bar - $200
Seat covers (for cold winter mornings) - $50
New battery - $70

Total so far; $4812.00 (-$150 for selling my softtop on craigslist a couple days ago = $4662.00)

That is approx. and I know I am missing things from my list... And I still need a lift kit, bigger rims and tires and a paint job.

Have pics?
I bought my 87 lasty year for $3,500.00 no rust 130,000 miles it has been really good to me thus far. And it was a really good deal for my area. I found a few cheaper even a few years younger but had many more problems. Look it over good for rust and take it for a 15-20 minute drive minimum try to hit every gear. Good Luck!
This was mine when I bought it...

First, I am not a big fan of Pre 91 YJ's when dealing with the 6cly, I like the fuel injection versions. Also not a fan of the 87 as its the odd ball year with the ba10 and the np207 t-case. Now if its got other stuff on it that might be something to consider, but bone stock way to much $$$.

it seems to be a bit high on the price unless it is in flawless but with 126000 im guessing there are some problems with it... you should check the frame, floor pans and body for rust and if there are any mods on it you should make sure that they were done correctly... pictures would really be a big help and yes the 4.0 is a better engine then the 4.2 and you could probably get a better deal out there

i bought my 87 a few months ago and absolutely love it. Body was totally sound and only had 95k on it. Came with a hard top and full doors and I think after tax and tags it was just around 4k. From the research I've done the stock carb is basically crap so you should look into getting a different one. Show us some pics of this thing. I'm interested! haha

Thumbs up What price for Wrangler happiness?

Here in the greater Seattle area, '87s can be picked up for anywhere from $2,900 to 3,900. It all depends upon mileage and condition. Mine has 125,000 on it, with newish tires/alloy wheels and a soft top. Engine is the 4.2L with 5-speed and low gear rear end. I figure it is worth about 3,300. A used hard top and doors goes for around $1750 up here, so figure that into your overall cost. I think the price might be a teeny bit high; you can always offer less. good luck.

I just paid 3k for an '87 6cyl rust free california jeep with 167k miles. A lot of new stuff, bestop top and seats etc. A little high but rare w/o rust in my area. Good luck

I found a 87 Laredo, 24k miles, sitting out by a barn. Daughter bought it new, didn't like it, dad took it over and only used it to launch his fishing boat.
I got the Jeep for $600. It didn't start initially but I got it going and now is my daily driver.
I know my case is extremely rare, but I am always looking behind buildings as I drive by. There are some finds out.
