1994 2.5L YJ rebuild? or crate motor?

Hey everyone Im new to the site and My dad passed down His Jeep to me and I couldn't be more stoked! Its a 1994 YJ 2.5L , only down side is it isn't running. Im going to own it for a long time so im wondering what would be a better route, a rebuild or a crate motor? Money is tight , andI know my way around an engine but will have to pay for the labor either way. I still have a lot of learning to do.

I just rebuilt a 95 2.5 and only put about $200 dollars into it. I had the head shaved and valves grinded , resealed. Then your gaskets , piston rings if needed, Shouldnt cost more than $400 If you do it yourself. I have a turbo on my 2.5. LOL If you want to grab some gears in a hurry go that route. Goona cost some cash though. Good luck

Hey guys thanks for the welcome and the help. Its got valve noise for sure and it needs a head gasket. I haven't opened it up yet but im hoping the head isn't cracked. I just figured if im going to have it apart I might as well go all the way. And levi497 , I think that might be a good route i just need a hand like I said i have a lot of learning to do ,but i don't have the resource of someone to teach me haha.

Rebuild it- if it is not cracked or is not been the project of several rebuilds-- rebuild it.. however-- dont overlook the easy things.. replace all the bolt ons you can (water pump-therm-upper/lower rad hoses.. etc.).. this will ensure you will not have to deal with any issue after the rebuild.

have fun and post some pics!
