1st time Jeep owner

Hello all.....This is my first jeep.....need some help. I just bought my son an 87 YJ that I have a few questions about. The speedometer cable is not attached to the transfer case, I was told that the previous owner has swapped out the NP 207 for an NP 231 (from a 98) and the cable doesn't attach. I looked at the end of the cable and it appears to have a cone shaped end with an O ring on it. Looking at the transfer case it appears that where the cable attaches it looks like male theads sticking out of the case for the cable to screw onto to with a small hole in the center. They do not appear to match. Does anyone have any ideas.....Different cable? Anything? Need to get the speedomter working before giving the jeep to my son. Also I have been looking all over the net for info, the jeep has 35" tires and if I understand the tag on the front jackpot, I would say it has 3.07 gears. I can't find any chart that tells me what speedomter gear I need. Thanks for any help.

87 Wrangler
6 cylinder
5 sp manual
NP 231 J (on tag)
4" Rough Coutry Lift
3" Body Lift
35" tires

I could be wrong but. a 87 had a actual speedo cable. the 98 would be no cable. it has a gear that sends a electrical pulse through wires. would have to change the speedometer itself. also 3.07 gears are not good with 35's. 4.56 would be better. if you get the speedo sorted out a gps to get actual speed then each tooth of speedo gear is about 2.5 mph. so if speedo is showing 10mph slow go 5 less teeth.

Fwiw, my 2000 had a cable. I would pull the 87 cable and go to a parts store and see if the 98 is the same, or look it up on line and see what you can find.
