So after doing some reading I have figured out that the 2.5 gets it's HP from the ability to rev higher than the 4.0 or 4.2. My question is, on a 25 year old engine how high is to high? The highest I have taken it is about 3700ish, and I started wondering if I was going to shoot a piston through my hood. I think I remember reading that the red line is at like 5500? Is that right? Now I know the first response is going to be "well depends on how good of shape your engine is in" so my question is what is "normal range" for the little 2.5?
For the sake of longevity I haven’t spun mine past the 3500 - 3700 mark and that’s only pulling out into heavy traffic. Acceleration seems to flatten out up past that anyway. Cruising on the highways I keep it under 3k. 20 years old and 170k on the clock and my little 2.5 still run’s fine.
Find a Cart that shows HP and TQ, where the two lines connect is going to be you best power, that does not mean drive there thats just the best place to shift if your trying to build speed the fastest, or go Straight up a Mountain Side. I would think driving should be a lower than that, but if Red line is 5,5K then 3.7K to 4.7K should not hurt a thing. That's a lot higher than I like, but I have a 4.2 that may not even pull 4.7K in any gear. I run my Harley up there all the time. Jap bikes run 14.K and more.
