4 cylinder off road??

So i am looking into buying a jeep and theres alot of 4 cylinders avaible. But if im going to have an suv its gonna go off road. everyone i know has the 4.0 so they have no experience with the 2.5. so please tell me... how will a STOCK 4 cyl do off road? and what about one with 4.5"lift and 33s??? thanks

My first YJ was a 4 cylinder. It did fine off-road with 4" of lift, 32's and a lockright in the rear, but I was dissappointed with the highway performance... If you don't have to drive far on the freeway, you will be alright, even with the stock gears. If you regear, you can do anything you want in it. Don't be afraid of the 4 cylinders at all, sometimes you can get GREAT deals on them... (That's why I bought my first one) That being said, if you find a 6 cylinder that is similar in price take it if you are doing a lot of highway/freeway driving. Good luck with your search!

My 00 TJ is a 4 banger......Just think GEARING. 4.88's and a 4:1. The 4cyl does fine for me and I have 37's. It will bounce off the limiter in 5th gear @ 92MPH. But, In all honesty I dont drive mine on the street at all.....If you can, the 4.0 is a motor if you have the $$$ but dont rule out the 2.5, it just needs more "Love"...

Uh, you have 6.38's buddy of course you have enough gearing. But I do agree with you the 4cyl is a torque little engine and can be a benefit off road with the right gearing.

i love my four cylinder, it gets the job done off road for me i mean its all in how you drive off road, if you like being technical nad trying to actually drive or if you want the power to just hammer on it and get through. i enjoy it off road actually more then any other vehicle ive driven off roadwe will see once i get the 33's on it though, i may have a whole new outlook (towards a 350 4bolt main)

i have 4squirrles under the hood and i love it. its my daily driver for the summer and i off road it almost every weekend. i have stock gears 33'' tires lockers front and rear and a 4 1/2'' lift. i just have to keep it in forth gear fifth is to high but i do get pretty good gas milage. so a 4 bangger is a great jeep to start with. happy jeeping
