4th for the highway?

My jeep:
95 YJ 4.0L v6 5 speed manual

I find myself driving on the highway around 55-65 mph (my standard cruising speed for the highway) in 4th and not using 5th gear. Am I wrong?

No you are not wrong. It is your jeep, you could even drive in 3rd if you want too.

I'm running 33s with stock gears and I never use 5th any more! Even before the tires I only used 5th over 65-70.

You're fine.

I have a 2.5 L with 31's, 4th gear is perfect for me. 5th seems to burn more fuel and overstress my transmission. I think majority rule says your good to go.

I usually find myself rolling in 4th for 55-60. The minute I go up to 5th, I drop below 55, and with the rolling hills on the highways between here and San Diego, that just doesn't work.

Since you have the 4.0 something isn't right. You're not getting all of the power out of that engine. Since you have a 95 I'll bet that your Cat is partially clogged. There will be no other symptoms other than some power loss. You should be able to run in 5th gear all day on the highway. If your Cat is original or over 80,000 on it should be time to change it.

My 4 YJ banger (with 112,000miles and 30" tires, 2" lift) goes fine on the flats in 5th...65 to 70.
ON Little rolliing Iowa hills. If I drive faster down hill I can usually get to 50-55 at the top with out down shifting. Down shifting I can maintain 55-60 with the wind.
