4wd gauge?

Hey I know this probably a "newbie" question....I've owned my Yj since November and I just got the 4wd working today. I never knew that the first gauge lights up to say 4WD, I always thought it was a blank dummy gauge. So I'm curious that if the "4WD" lights up on the top half of the gauge is anything supposed to light up on the bottom half? I was thinking maybe it was for 4 LOW but nothing lit up when I engaged it.

Hmmm. What year is your YJ?
I'm new too, mine is an '89 and I don't think mine has that indicator.
If I am indeed correct, where is the indicator for the '89?
My FWD works but I have no indicator light, hoping it's just a bulb I can replace.

You have a clock, 93-95 have a 4WD indicator

But an idea just occurred to me, one could probably install a small OLED clock under the 4WD indicator... hmm.

You could be correct, I just did a quick google search to determine the year range.

Further research:

91-95 had the indicators, however I believe just the late 91's had it as I have seen too many 91's with clocks to be a coincidence.

87-90/91 YJ the 4wd light is in the center of the dash along with the seat belt, parking brake, and high beams.

I've had that piece out of the dash before. There is no "screen" on the bottom half to shine light through, and there is no light bulb. The screen and bulb are only on the top. And there is a difference between FWD and 4WD that is enough to write home about. These small differences (D ring vs shackle, lock ring vs snap ring, tow strap vs recovery strap) are enough to cause an improper repair due to a wrong part/tool, misunderstanding, etc. Given this context, there are no front wheel drive Wranglers, but someone may not know that.

For example, there are lock rings in the transfer case. They require lock ring pliers. Many people call them snap rings. Snap ring pliers won't work on these clips. Small terminology difference, big difference when you spend an extra hour screwing around with snap ring pliers.

I agree with MM. Accuracy is important in speech to convey the correct meaning by the speaker.
Often the correct interpretation can be made by examining the context. But not always.

As I read many posts, it is obvious that the poster never proof reads his/her post. It's difficult to give good advice if the question isn't clear.
There is a sticky on the top of this page labeled "A better way to get help when posting on the technical forum". It should be required reading prior to a newbie being able to post.

The harder we try to be accurate in our speech (and writing) the better our communication with others will be and our lives will benefit from it.

Good Luck, L.M.

So, you guys thought my wrangler was FWD, huh.
I spent the last 15 years of my previous career teaching everything from CPR, to firearms, to report writing for the DOJ.
I am currently a public school teacher. I know how to write and speak correctly. I know (and teach) to speak/write to your audience. I just didn't know my audience here included the grammar police.
I thought it was more geared toward like-minded individuals helping each other.
To those who said to themselves "I know what he means" and offered advice, thank you, I appreciate it.

I know what you mean but someone who isn't familiar with YJs reading this thread may not understand. Nothing wrong with trying to clear up confusion, all good here.

Instructor9, thank you for your service to the public school systems. Public education has been entrusted with the future of this country.

You would think a teacher of all things would understand the importance of getting small details correct.

Instructor9, you said it yourself. "To those who said to themselves 'I know what he means' and offered advice, thank you". However your assumption that EVERYONE knows what you mean is the problem. I appreciate your comments and I didn't mean to start any kind of grammar lesson here, but if the object is to make things clear, why is there a debate about it? MMYJ's example of lock rings vs snap rings is an excellent example. Sure, knowledgeable people will "know what I mean" but others may not and that can cause problems. Can we move on now?

thanks Jens1310! I had completely forgot about this thread, lol.
Thank you for showing me a pic, I still haven’t fixed it, but this could be the year!
Just to clean it up and put it to bed.
I completely understand where I went wrong in the whole FWD vs 4WD thing.
I do agree with you-guys, there is a difference and instead of trying to defend my wrong stance, I should have conceded I was wrong and edited it!
Maybe I’ve grown…

I have not seen a different light between 4HI and 4Lo in any of my 6 Jeeps. (MY '89 to '17) There are different lights in Rubicons to indicated when the lockers were locked.
