4wd light and dash lights

New poster here. Been a lurker since September when I bought a 1995 Jeep Wrangler Rio grande. Love it. Have already done a lot of work to it. Here's my question. Was deer hunting a few weeks ago and the 4wd light did not come on when I engaged it. 4wd works. After lots of research on this site I changed the switch/actuator. Still no light. Today I took apart the dash panel. There are four holes for lights on the instrument panel. Only three lights. Weird. One hole didn't have a light. All three lights work. Checked all three while in four low in the open slot and still no 4wd light. Help!

make sure the switch is plugged in. There's another connector up the harness on the passenger side that I found disconnected on mine.

Hold a flashlight behind the small panel that has the lenses to determine which one has the indicator for 4X. Then determine if you actually have a bulb in that place.

Have you tried moving bulbs around. Most guys ignore or remove the upshift indicator bulb.

You may have other issues with the vacuum or electrical circuits, but at least you will know for certain which bulb should light.

Do you have vacuum at the switch? The Jeep has to be running in order for the light to light. (Jeep not running....no vacuum to activate the switch).

Good Luck, L.M.

Try switching the bulbs as L.M. said, but the 4WD light on the newer dash style uses the same bulbs as the backlights for the gauges, so the upshift indicator wouldn't work. Just swap the lights with one that you know works, plug in the dash (without installing it), and go from there.

Bulb is on the bottom half of that circle between the speedo and the rest of the cluster. There is a black film that makes the pretty picture of the super sweet 4x4 system.

Finally got to look at this today. All my lights work on the dash panel. Followed the vac hoses from the switch up toward the front passenger tire. Two hoses break off and go down behind the tire. They were plugged in. The other two hoses go up toward motor. Popped the hood and found that one is connected to something and the other is not connected to anything. Will post pics. Any suggestions??

One that is connected. Unconnected one is the line coming down and tothe right.

This vac hose ends like this. Can't figure out where it should be connected. I'll also add a side view pic.

I had the same thing in mine. Dead end, no connection.

Make sure your electrical circuit is working. Plug the sending unit out of the CAD and push it in. I've found that sometimes the sending units don't actually contact the fork surface.

Since your 4WD is engaging, there shouldn't be any vacuum issues with the CAD.

Don't want to hijack the thread but I am interested in this as well as mine does not work and I have not checked it yet. Vacuum is what turns on the 4wd light and not a hard contact switch? My 4 wheel works just no light.

That dead end should be your vent. When you shift back to 2WD, it keeps the vacuum system between the TC and axle from imploding.

Vacuum actuates the CAD so you get 4WD, the switch for your dash light is mounted to the CAD. It is a hard switch, that when the plunger pulls over, should be contacted.

This is correct. That is the vent for the system. It just hangs there and puzzles every new YJ owner. Myself included.

The items in your pic are the vacuum supply lime and its check valve, and the hanging vent with its debris filter. They are in the factory configuration. Which is good.

Thanks everyone! sounds like my vacuum and switch are working right. Since my 4wd works good, I'm not going to worry about the light on the dash coming on. Just bugs me when little stuff like that doesn't work. Oh Well.

My 93 had a broken wire at the actuator. The plastic coating was still attached making it look like it was good. Changed the electrical end of the actuator and it worked.

I am confused here, not a real shocker I know but is there a vacuum line that is making a switch to turn the 4 wheel light on or a mechanical one or do they change by year. Mine is a 89 and even though I have not got to it yet it is on my list.

On your front axle on the passenger there is a box which houses the collar and fork for you to put your jeep in 4 wheel drive. There is a vacuum switch located on the top of that box . It also has 2 wires which when you shift into 4 wheel drive turns your light on. You need to look at it and determine if it is working properly. There are a few threads on here that shows how it all works I Think Mud Magnet has posted the diagrams. Check in the search area for those threads.
