4x works, but is unhappy doing so...

I am getting a higher pitched "Whirring" from under the hood when I drive in 4x, only when the clutch is out. It goes up and down with the idle.

I am also getting a low pitch "rubbing" sound when I slow from about 30mph to a stop also in 4x. Its coming from the front, I think.

Any ideas?

turn the wheels all the way one way, spin the tire by hand and watch the joint, and try to move the axle shaft at the joint. turn the other way to check the other. no movement should be there accept the spinning. nothing else
