88 YJ front locker or non

Noticed today that my front diff is possibly a non-locker. New to the Jeep scene is this correct or could I have a problem with my vacuum system? I had the left front wheel up on a small dirt mound and the right front wheel on flat ground. Right front spun, left front did nothing. Also my left rear spun and my right rear did not.

If the right wheel is spinning then the vacuum system is working cause that is the wheel it engages. The yj's dont have locking hubs like the cj's do. They make a kit to do that though.

Thank you very much for the reply. I shall be fixing that problem in the very near future. By chance do you have a link to the kit?

You're welcome. I would also recommend a locker. Then you can disengage when driving so it won't be locked then lock it in and then upgrade the shafts you'll be set

What you're describing in your first post is that both of your differentials are "open", meaning neither one has any traction aiding devices installed. (Limited slip, locker, etc.)

I pretty much knew the rear was non-locking just was not sure how the front worked. And Tang, keep helping people, I for one was helped with your response.
Well, front and rear diffs being open is not going to work for me. I will be looking into ways, like what Tang posted, to fix this problem.

Thanks. I was trying to say it is open differential and if you lock it you can get the Hubs to disengage it for normal driving. But yeah your vacuum should be working lol. I gotta slow down when responding though.

What about air lockers? Will the work in the front and rear diffs?

You can get them for the front and rear yes. But check the spline counts sometimes they don't work with stock shafts. Also it would be a different locker for each axle and you would need a compressor onboard
