My YJ randomly tries to stall right after being started and then runs fine. It will just run rough for a couple of seconds and then goes back to normal. The plugs wires and cap were just recently replaced. We also cleaned the throttle but that didn't seem to help. Now it doesn't feel like its running as strong as it used to. Any ideas on what it could be?
IAC. Idle Air Control valve. They get carboned up and need cleaned periodically. Not only the valve but the slot that it fits into the throttle body as well.
We did a quick clean job didn't take it apart, but ill try that next. This whole problem started the day after driving it through flood waters(only about 2 feet deep) and puddles all day long. Not sure if that caused this problem or it's just a coincidence.
Well, you didn't add that detail in the beginning. Did you bother to take the air cleaner out and clean the air box?
Water that deep isn't good for an air system unless you are running a snorkel. I would bet the air cleaner got damp, and it is restricting the filter and flow of air. Once the air cleaner element gets damp it will retain the wetness until you swap out the element for a new one.
Does weather have any affect on it? My jeep did the same thing but only on a rainy day. Other wise it'll run better but the same issues aren't as prevalent
No i dont think so, it'll try to stall in any kind of weather. At first I was thinking it was some kind of fuel problem but now it feels like it could be anything.
I wonder if you got water in the gas tank? Seems unlikely, but the cure is simple. There is a product call "drygas". From what I understand, it is alcohol that mixes with the water and then the water passes through the FI system. I don't know how much alcohol you might need but a quart of denatured alcohol shouldn't be too expensive and may help. The drygas should be available at your local auto parts store.
Good Luck, L.M.

We thought it was water in the tank when it first happened so we used iso heet but that didn't seem to help. I ended up doing the whole morse code thing with the check engine light. I got a code for the coolant sensor so we replaced it and it actually stopped stalling out, but it was idling rough. Then we found a vaccum line that wasnt hooked up that went from the manifold to the map sensor. So far the jeep has been running fine.
So you had two things that caused what seemed like one problem. That's a good thing for all of us to remember as we look for the cause of whatever problem we are working on at the time.
Glad you got it fixed.
Good Luck and merry Christmas. L.M.
I love happy ending. I sure wish my jeep had a check engine light
