A 95 yj question

Hi everyone. I bought a 95 yj that needed a little work. It didn't run until I replaced the fuel pump. I also redid the interior, including bed lining the floors and replacing the carpet. Rear window was smashed so I replaced that too. There were several other little things I did too including repairing the doors. The jeep sat for a while cause the last registration on the jeep says 03.

I just started driving it and everything is great so far. My first question is, every time a come to a stop, I hear a bang, and it comes at random times. I can't tell where it's coming from cause I'm always inside when it happens. Somewhere underneath though. Any ideas? It's a 4.0 with an automatic transmission. It happens in drive, one time in park. Oh yeah and it's all stock suspension.

Thanks!

Hard to say if you cant tell where its coming from, could be anything from slop in the drivetrain, to the exhaust hitting the floor or skid plate due to mounts being worn out.

Yes your right. It just happened again as I was starting the jeep, but I was inside. Seemed to have come from under the hood this time. It's so hard to tell or explain. I thought maybe it was something obvious that others experience with this model. It's for sure not exhaust or any loose mounts cause it's happened when parked. Something is clicking on every once in a while.

I think its the a/c compressor, similar noise, just louder. Not really metal on metal, more of a clicking/switch noise. Everything else is in good shape from what i can tell. It happened a few times this morning, but didn't open the hood on time. Seems as though it happens more when cold, next time, ill be ready, but I really feel its the a/c compressor for some reason.

Unplug the A/C compressor and see if the noise goes away.
It is possable that the compressor is cycling due to low freon level or cooler temperatures. If the problem goes away then you have found it.

May not be my business but why would you have the A/C on in Chicago in Jan? Mine is a separate unit from the heating system all together. Is yours part of a factory in dash unit?

That's the thing, it is off, and it is factory. Maybe there's a short circuit. I don't know, but I'll test the a/c closer to summer. I have not heard the noise in a few days now. When I pulled it into my shop, I turned on the a/c and the compressor was not turning on. Maybe a wiring issue.
