Has your YJ been lifted? When a suspension lift is installed, it changes the steering geometry and makes you steering wheel alignment different. Some folks just leave it that way. Regardless, that doesn't have anything to do with the play. You need to look at all of the connections in the steering system to check for play and worn parts. Tie rod ends, bell crank, and so on. If they are dry, it may just need a little grease, but considering the age of the Jeep, it's most likely wear!
