Does anyone have a write up of any thing on installing an aftermarket radio in their yj? I bought a install kit from a local stereo shop thinking I could do it myself casue I have done them in my other vehicles...but my yj is getting the best of me. I cant figure out how to mount the radio into the factory dash location.
I bought a Smittybuilt metal console from Qtec for a hunderd bucks.
It locks with a metal trap door and a round key. I had to run additional wires for power and the speakers to the console but the PO had already cut the factory radio plug off. I used a Chiltons manual to determine what wires did what and purchased an antenna extension wire at NAPA. Now I feel much better when leaving my Jeep parked while the doors are off. The radio doesn't flop around and it is easy to reach without leaning forward.

I'm with Ranger and Luckymac on this, if you're already installing a new stereo consider dropping the extra dough on a locking center console and relocate the stereo there. If you can afford a tuffy, get one of those, the quality of the hinge weld on the smittybuilt is kind of crappy. I just had to fix mine last week. But having the unit in the center console is much better than in the dash. I don't think I could go back to a dash mount.
i love have it in the console makes it easier to operate i think.. plus keeps the rain out of it when you get caught in the no top down pour or morning dew..
