Dude I feel your pain I had the same issue first time I went out and lost it on a hill climb and had to back (slide) all the way down with getting sideways and rolling.
The old vacuum system can be fixed and reliable for a long time but the best bet is to lock it over for cheap and if the front shaft vibrates have it balanced for $75 and be done with it.
We don't have much water on the trails in the desert we could call that a river crossing. Lesson learned and press on it is a great picture though to remind everyone what a bad day looks like.
