Hey forum

Yes it started well as u can tell i have a issue and some questions. Well here's a break down, i was fortunate to have a YJ fall in my lap (yes blessed). Ok she has a bit pf mileage on her 170k but i believe she was well taken care of. Well she was sitting for abiut 2 years yes unfortunately but she's back for action. So i drove her for abiut 3 weeks off and on changed her oil and checked fluids. So i had her for abiut 2 months and was just about to do her tranny fluid and transfer case and tube up bam. I started hearing a clunky noise after i switched gears and hut the gas. Well i figured needed some TLC but man just hoping not toooo much.

So hears my thoughts first needs some fluids topped off and some loving im hearing the push baring hope i can shoot some WD40 or stronger at ot to stop the noise just hopimg its not the clutch. I mean i can pick one up just wished i didnt have too now. She runs breath just put a throttle body spacer on her she picks up reaches 70mph fine and can switch into 4x4 but hope its a small fix so i can get her back on the road.

Any thoughts or suggestions will help

Thank you in advance.

So she is a 2.5 Manuel ax5 yj with 170k+

Ps. Please be gental im a handyman not a gear head so some terms are above me. :banned:

I think you may want a clutch kit for that... Any idea if your clutch is stock or not? I know somebody who had a Dodge with 200k on the clutch, so there's a good chance it's stock.

My previous owner rebuilt the transmission when he replaced the clutch, and said he tried Advance and AutoZone, but NAPA had the parts. The clutch set is $240.

Try to check the transmission fluid first. Take out the FILL plug and see if any fluid comes out. If some comes out, quickly put the plug back in and check the fluid that drained (put a clear cup under it).

If nothing came out, see if you can find the fluid level by putting your finger in the fill plug. Get a straw in there to check the quality of the fluid.

If you can't feel any fluid, drain it out and put in new fluid.

Not trying to start anything, but the new fluid specs in AX5/AX15 is 10W-30 motor oil... Some prefer gear oil. Just don't use GL-3 gear oil, that's the general Valvoline or Mobil 1 gear oil you find at parts stores. You'll need to make sure it's specialized GL-5 lubricant.

Look at the videos below. The first is the fluid change, the second is a discussion on the fluids.

Actually it's $144, I'm not sure which one I was looking at. It may have been for another vehicle in my saved vehicles.

Good looking out again bro. Yea not sure on clutch ill price around hoping no tranny damage realky want her back on the road. But yea i did pick up some fluid its anticarosive ill have to double check the specs.

I also have the slip stopper so hopefully that helps. Im pretty sure the fluid level good just hope it needed to be changed. Ill post a new thread showing the step by step and the results.

Keep jeeping bro and thanks:beerdrinking:

Adding my 2 cents....ive heard good things about Pennzoil Synchromesh. might have to really clean it out with the previous oil but i think im going to go that route when chaining my tranny fluid..only thing i could say is be mindful of the brass syncros that what ever you put in doesn't damage them. and im curious your set up seems to be the same set up as mine im running 31's pretty much all stock and your hitting 70 mph? To my understanding (without regearing) the speedo actually is a plus or minus difference of 5 mph so in reality your engine is doing/working 75 plus more experienced/knowledge people will correct.... seems a bit heavy foot for my taste are you getting a feel for your truck's limits or is that your normal cruise?

First i must say JOKER is a God. Secondly i have heard about the pennzoil i actually just picked some up. Yes i do have the 31's i dont know exactly if was lifted i still need to measure but i do somewhat have a lead foot yes still feeling her out. I do hear the push out baring so dont know if should wait for it to go out. Just want her on the road already 😢 thinking might do the clutch to prevent any future damage but ugh lol
Thank u:beerdrinking:

Are you trying this yourself or taking it to a shop? Dropping the transmission requires a few sensors and shifter linkages to be removed. Plus it's sandwiched between the motor and transfer case, so the transfer case will probably have to come out. Make sure you get a torque wrench and torque everything to spec.

Personally, if it were me, I would do it myself, but after buying a transmission jack. That's me though, I'm comfortable in my abilities and tools. My first few weeks with my Jeep were kinda rough... I messed up my bumper bolts trying to install tow hooks and still haven't been able to get them. Brakes also had to get done at a shop. Since then, everything has been done by myself except tires.

It all depends on your abilities and your quality of tools. If you strip a bolt in a cast transmission housing, you're going to have a bad time.

Good looking out bro. Yea i have a steady leak kept looking at it seams to be the oil pan and vavle cover. But seem that some rear main seals come 2 pc. But if i can only get 1 ill just wait till clutch goes completely out lol. Still wabting to get her on the road as much as possible.
