Lightbulb Any advice would help 88 sahara

This my first Thread. I've been browsing for a few days and have learned so much already. But as I'm sure is the usual case I came here with a list of problems of my own and need some solutions. About me n my 88 jeep wrangler Sahara.. I'm a down south ga boy. Loud n proud. Growing up my dad let me tear up the dirt roads with his jeep. The one I'm currently driving n California. Back home the jeep hada few problems (fill up the radiator periodically, hard to crank n the cold, etc.) normal odds n ends but I could ride anywhere anytime. If there was a road I could ride forever. But I now live n California. By good graces my dad let me borrow his huntin jeep til I come home/ it's my car now. So I had it towed a million miles from the heart of Dixie to the pacific. Back home I never would've doubted it would've made the drive but now I know it probly wouldn't have made it to the mississip. Right off the bat I gave it a good tune up. Oil change, plugs n wires, coil, cap, fuel/oil/air filters... Trust me I know Wat offroading does to cars n this jeep is no stranger. So obviously as my primary vehicle I'm thinking no trails n take damn good care of it. So I drove it for a few months n all hell broke loose on my car! Any help would be much obliged! 6 months later n a few grand gone this jeep gets worse daily.
Maybe I'll start with the simplest problems.
1. This jeep has a 1 year old brand new radiator on it. I keep jugs of water n my car bc at random times it will dump every drop out. Never when it's running and never 2 days n a row totally random. As soon as I turn it off water dumps from the connection at the lower hose. I took the lower hose off n there's no hole n either hose or radiator. Maybe a new connector would help but as of right now it's due for new water (it's beena while)
2. Wat is gas mileage??? Try 120 miles a tank. If me of y'all have a yj ur jaw just hit the floor. Gladly I work less than a mile from my pillow so I don't drive daily. I drive 2 days a week n to the grocer obviously. Cannot afford cali gas nthe first place.
3. It has a total loss of power. After browsing I think I have a 4.2 carb with 31 on 15s. I don't think saharas came with manual trans but it's gota clutch. I have to carry out every gear to get it to move right. If I change to fast it will slow down n barely make the next mile. There is no 5th (only on the biggest hill on the interstate for 1/4mile) sometimes to keep it from chokin up I have to really rev it to get it movin n 1st
4. My next bill will b having the exhaust fixed. It has a loud leak at the manifold. I read a few posts that indicated an exhaust leak might have cause on flooding the engine and loss of power by the o2 sensor. I really doubt it but I'm desperate. I will post n tell the difference if me after (still a couple weeks away)
5. Jeep cranks when it wants. I just got it out of the shop 10 days ago n not ready to take it back.. If I'm Gona b n a hurry or n public( not at home) I will park on a hill n push start. Not to say it won't start IT WILL just on its own time.. Sometimes it'll start right up first try sometimes I'll try for hours (didn't get the hill) it's got a brand new ignition module 2 months ago. Can't b the battery or starter bc it starts... Ne leads? I'm lost push starting is a little old Skool n gets old but it's a quick fix for me.
6. There's gota be more I can't think of right now. This car has a rebuilt engine with 45k. But runs like a pos. I honestly love my jeep n my dads asked over n over if I wana sell it. I just want it to run normal. I take it to get fixed get it back n need something else n no time. I've dropped bill after bill thinking this is the one but as soon as I hit the road it's always something. Oh n I needa new top but I gota make it run right before I even think about lux.
Ne1. Nebody gota 88 Sahara how is it? Specs? Oh n it's gota new rear end.im thinking the hills out here ate it to shreds as there aint no hills in the coastal plains. Don't know the gears off hand but can't be hard to find out. I got no problem turnin a wrench. Been workin on cars since I got my first tooth ha!

1) Sounds like the radator plug.

2) Full tune up carb, check exhaust for leaks.

3) Carb tune up and adjusted

4) Get that leak fixed, 4.2L didn't have O2 sensor its carb

5) Sounds flooded/fouled plugs from running to rich.

Got the right cap on that radiator? Sounds like the pound # setting (when it will release pressure) is too high, or not letting it vent.

Did you set the ignition timing when you did the full tune up?

Have you done a compression test?

What did the plugs look like when you pulled them?

If your compression is good and you timing is on...the driveability issues are carb or fuel pump related.

My 87 had an O2 sensor (still there in fact) but the computer has been bypassed. Did you pass Cali inspection? If so, you're probably not running too rich on the carb.

The radiator plug is n. I'm not sure bout the right cap on the tadiator. Didnt really know there was a difference. How do I check the pound setting?I'll have compression and timing done ASAP.
M have the carb adjusted hopefully it's as simple as it sounds..
I have not had Cali inspect. Honestly idk a thing about it just doin my thang til then. Appreciate the help! Or anymore comment

I have an '87 with a 4.2L and its carbed. If yours is like mine it came stock with a peugot BA-10 5spd. and a new process 207 t-case. It also has 3.07 gears in the Dana 30 front end and Dana 35 rear end.
1. I would replace the radiator cap.
2. If you only had a 10 gal tank then 120 miles is about normal unless you want to buy some serious upgrades for the motor. The stock carb is a junk carter 2BBL. You can try running a cpl cans of seafoam in it and it might help. I replaced mine with an edelbrock carb.
3. Your major loss of power could be from a few things besides the junk carb, the ethanol in the gas out there is a lot higher percent than on the east coast. You might want to try an ethanol cleaner, made my jeep go from low teens to (just checked it today) 21mpg. I run Lucas Ethanol Conditioner. And the ethanol here in Pennsylvania is only at 8%, in cali i think its twice that.
4. The exhaust leak is a big reason for alot of your problems, the motor you have is a high torque engine and is designed to run with a complete exhaust which creates back pressure. And if its a bad enough exhaust leak, its possible that you couldve burnt a valve.
5. The issue of cranking when it wants can possibly be a bad connection or dirty terminals on the ignition switch(happened to me). The switch is located up under the dash along side the steering column. there is a rod coming down your steering column that goes into the switch. When you turn the key, it pushes this rod into the switch, which sends the power to the solenoid to start the motor. The switch is 14.38 at auto zone. Or it could be the starte solenoid itself.
6. You just want it to be right, but its a jeep. LOL. I have mine almost right all the time, but i am constantly fixing something.

In 1987, the 258 CID 4.2L came with 3.07 gears stock. You could order the folowing: 3.07,3.55,3.73,4.10
the 2.5L 4cyl came stock with 4.10 gears. In '87 chrysler was new to the jeep game and wanted to try to get fuel mileage out of their new designed wrangler. Hence the reason for the 3.07 gears.

My jeep isnt stock anymore. I now have a new longblock 258, coupled to an AX-15 trans with a NP231 with SYE from a '97 TJ, and 4.56 gears. 8.5" of lift, and riding on 35" mud kings on american racing wheels.
My next task is to Monstaliner the inside and outside.
An answer to your question about 5th gear, the reason for the trans swap was because of the synchros going out on the 5th/reverse shaft in the BA-10. But you are correct when you said that 5th was an OD.
