Alright all of us know the importance of getting stronger axles, and I'm trying to research before I do mine. I'm thinking about doing the back first, since it is the default driving axle and I don't put it in four till I need it. Do any of ya'll know who makes the best upgraded axles? And for lockers, I don't know whether to look into air, electronic, or an OX manual. I don't want a detroit locked rear since my rig sees plenty of street driving.
You may want to look into doing a whole new rear assembly, like an 8.8 out of an Explorer or Ranger, or a new unit from Currie, HiNine, or Dynatrac. The Dana 35c that is in the rear of the YJ's can only be made so strong... I think the expression is "You can polish a turd all you want, but it's still crap..." That being said, I had very good luck with the ARB locker in the Currie high-pinion in the rear of my YJ. I was running 33's with 4.10 gears behind the stock 4.0L motor.

Currie does make awesome axles, and I would highly recommend ARB lockers, as they can be disengaged at the flick of the button. More expensive, but best in the long run. Not to sure about OX, as they have had some difficulties as a company. I have been told to stay clear of them by the extreme world. I trust the opinions of my builders, as that is the business they are in. And as you already stated, Detroits suck on the road, and are not that great off road, as they will load up, and then release, causing some hairy moments wheel'n.
Well it all depends on what kind of money you want to spend. Personally I wouldn't think there is any better of an axle than a Dynatrac Pro Rock 60. They are mighty expsensive, but also darn near bullet proof.
That being said the 8.8 is an excellent swap for someone with a D35. 3" tubes, bigger ring gear, 31 spline larger shafts. It's a good cheap all around axle to use even up with 37's.
Personally with a locker I like having as few moving parts as possible. So with a selectable locker you have to take into account either an air source, and electrical connection or a cable. OX did in deed have some issues a ways back, but I know several guys that run them in 44's and 60's and they do perform very well. I myself don't like the ARB because I've seen too many problems with air leaks, compressor failure, and improper installation. You have to know exactly what you are doing to setup an ARB properly.

Money is sort of an issue. I want top quality. I don't want something that will be breaking cause I settled with something cheaper. On the other hand, this thing won't be entering rock crawling competitions, and its not gonna have 400 hp on it. I just want something that will eventually take a v8 and stand up to some moderate to slightly heavy wheeling/ occasional trailer pulling. So is my 35 out? How hard is it to put in a 8.8 or 9 in the back? I've never been afraid of anything on cars, but I don't know what kind of installation I'm looking at there. Welding? I've only got a 120 mig. anyways, I'll ramble on forever if you let me. But yeah, thanks for the ideas and keep them coming. And please tell me what my options are on the front axle.
