Broken 92 joining the team!

This jeep is almost as old as me! Hello all, this is my first post. I have more questions than answers right now, but that will change in time.

I bought myself a 92 4 cylinder standard, had some transmission issues but fixed them, and then had a perfectly running jeep! The only problem is now it wont start. It worked great for about two weeks after I got the master cylinder replaced. When I turn the key the lights turn on and I can hear the solenoid click but the starter does not engage. I took out and tested both the starter and alternator.

-check engine light
-new battery
-new spark plugs
-starter tested and works
-alternator tested and works
-starts when jumped

I'm not sure what could be wrong with my jeep. I could not get the engine light checked, shops nearby cannot check them for cars this old apparently. I've read on other forums that it could be the voltage regulator, which is often inside the alternator. I checked behind the battery as well, could not find anything. Im not sure what the next step is, I really want to get this beast running.

Any advice?

A bad ground connection will cause this and if your altenator, starter and battery all checked out, its the first place I would start. Check all wire connections to the starter. I have seen corroded battery terminals cause this. Check the negative side battery terminal to frame/body connection too. Check, clean, and tighten your connections and see what you got.

When nothing's going right...go left!

There are also terminals at the starter relay which is just to the right of the battery down low. There is a big red wire (beside the main wire to the starter) going from the positive battery post to this relay and carries most of the Jeeps current for everything besides the starter. If you have cheapo replacement battery terminals I would suspect them as well. Thats where I would check anyway for corrosion as Chief suggested. When you put booster cables on it bypasses the battery. If the cables are original, they can corrode on the inside where you wont see it. If battery and starter check out there really isnt much else.

If it starts when its jumped,take cables off the battery and clean your connections good.
93 yj 2.5 swap to 4.0,ax15. 4 inch RC lift with 33s.410 gears

Yeah if it starts when jumped I guess that rules out any ignition issues or connection issues beyond the battery. Definitely try cleaning the posts on the battery up and the terminals on the wires.

Sorry for the late reply. It turns out the issue was with the connections to the voltage regulator, or whatever that little black box on the alternator is called. The wires were cut too short the fix but luckily I found another one at the junkyard. When I noticed my brand new battery wasn't holding a charge, I decided to test the alternator at another place. It failed so with a new alternator, voltage regulator and some heatshrink it was fixed!

...until the next day it stopped starting again. This time the solenoid wasn't clicking, and jumping it didn't work. I was stranded far from home when some other jeep owners helped me out by pushing me to pop the clutch. I tested the starter again, it passed, but I bought a new one anyways bc there really wasnt any other option. And the jeep is fixed again. For now.
