Buying an 88' yj, what to look for?

Hey guys, a good friend of mine is looking into buying an 88 yj. I'm not a mechanic, but I know my way around a jeep for the most part. (Don't boo me, but I am more comfortable with TJ's considering I own one.) he wants me to go with him to check it out this weekend and I want to make myself a small checklist of things to look for.

I don't know many details as of right now, all I know is that it is an 88 with around 130k miles. Inline 6 manual. Owner told him that he has rebuilt the engine recently and tuned everything up and the car has no problems whatsoever. My question is why would he need to rebuild the engine at 130k miles? My old 90' had 125k miles and the engine was completely fine. Is it just me or is it odd? It has a raise and my friend guesses it's 4inches but it looks smaller to me. (Through pics)

I don't have better pictures but will take some when I actually see it. My question here is what do I look for? What are some red flags and what's it worth?

Oh yeah! He's asking 5,000 for it.

As with any Jeep, make sure it's rust free in common places along the frame and tub. Also since it's an 88 test the transmission and all gears real good because it doesn't have the Ax15. It has the Peugeot BA10-5 weak car tranny.

Check for the obvious rust on a jeep in all the usual spots look at the power steering fluid make sure it's full make sure the tracbar is in good shape and smell the transmission fluid if it smells burnt than the trans might have a problem or need a fluid change and make sure that there are no wiring issues under the dash (if all dash lights work it's fine [turn indicator brights indicator check engine light 4x4 light]) because it is not an enjoyable task to redo

$5K is a red flag...... never paid more than $1200 for one with less than 100K miles on it.....got a 95 for $1200 with only 85K miles......and an 82 with 62K miles for $1000.... granted... they were not perfect......but not $5K either.....

Had 75CJ5, 89YJ, 93YJ. Have 82CJ7 & 95YJ____Not one burnt yet due to lack of relays.

engine was probably rebuilt due to poor care by a previous owner. I had to rebuild mine at 115K
price depends on your area, check craigslist. in S fla. 5k is average asking price.

Check frame for rust, hit the frame... rear by shackle mounts.. front by steering box. Frankly for 5k it needs to be locked, sye, gear change etc... also I would hold out for a fuel injection version starting with the 91 model year.
