Can full size axles be covered by fenders?

I'm planning on doing a dana 44 and ford 9" swap.

My questions are;
How far will these tires hang out?
Planning on going tall and skinny 35-37

Will it look dumb to have a tube fender out that far?
My state requires tire tread to be covered
Then I was thinking to run removable flaps on the backs of them.
Or another option is to run 33's skinny as can be with a large BSing then run larger tires to get to offroad events and trails but still be tucked in enough not to get harrassed?


Opinions?

i'm kinda curious as well, as i'm about to do the same swap, i already have a d44 high pinion, and a 9" in the backyard i just need to re-build and re-gear....i have 7" extended flares so i'm wondering myself how far out my 40" boggers are gonna stick.

It all depends on which 9" and which 44 you go with. For instance, the 9" is available in all of the following sizes, depending on what you pull it from:

  • 65-66 Mustang 57.25 inches
  • 67-70 Mustang 59.25 inches
  • 71-73 Mustang 61.25 inches
  • 77-81 Versailles 58.50 inches
  • 67-73 Mustang, Torino, Ranchero, Fairlane 9" 59.25 inches to 61.25 inches
  • 57-59 Ranchero and station wagon rears, 57.25 inches
  • 66-77 Bronco 9", 58 inches
  • 77-81 Granada/Versailles, 58 inches
  • 67-71 Comet, Cougar, Mustang, Fairlane, 59.25 inches
  • 71-73 Mustang, 61.25 inches
  • 64 Falcon 58 inches
  • 67 Cougar 60 inches
  • 67 Fairlane 63.50 inches (coil springs)
  • 72 Ford Van 3/4 ton 68 inches
  • 73-86 65.25 inches
  • 57-59 Ranchero and station wagon 57.25 iches (narrowest 9" housing)
  • 66-77 Bronco 58 inches but has 5-on-5 1/2 inch diameter bolt circle
  • 67-73 Torinos, Rancheros, Fairlanes 59.25 inches or 61.25 inches
  • 67-71 Comets, Cougars, Fairlanes 59.25 inches
Add to that the factors of wheel offset, wheel width, etc. and you could have wild variances.

If your state requires full fender flares, I say fab them. Get some 20g sheet metal and some 1" tubing and build custom fenders to fit whatever application you need.

Thankfully where I'm at in Florida, no one cares. I run with no fenders in the back and thin tubes up front.

Sorry I forgot to mention.

Fullsize axles from a f150 extended cab.

Although looking at those numbers. How many of those have front leaves? To ease the swap. I know the cars don't but what about some of those midsize "trucks"?

I think I'll barrow some of my buddy's tires 33's-37's o-plenty. (Not usable for me 16" & 16.5" but will work for ideas)
And mock em up for looks.

On a side note about the same jeep. And project.

How far can a YJ be stretched using junk yard parts?

Suspension wise.

I'll get drive shafts made. I got a place in portland I like.

With waggy springs you can do a 4 inch stretch pretty easily

Is that 2" front and 2" rear?
Just wanting to know so I know where to position the tires for mocking up to give me an idea of what's coming.

Yeah the pin is offset an inch off center and the springs are an inch longer than stock, so mounting them how they came off the front of the wagoneer gives you no stretch, but mounting them backwards gives you two inches. I did the front only so far on mine and when i measured it, it was actually more like 3 inches, so your results may vary

I also have a Ford 44 and 9 inch out of a 74 f100, the wms to wms is about 64.5" i have 3 inch backspace wheels and 12.5 wide km2s.. 6 inch wide flares and i have about 2 inches of tread that aren't covered

How much axle work did you need to do?
Or do the perches line up good?

That's gives me an idea.
I wonder what 6" flares (possibly flat style) would look like with 2-3" spacers or block between the flare and fender. Painted black and cut to match the flares contour.

Btw I have a machine shop I can use when business is slow.

I think my additional inch or so comes from the fact that the eyes of the springs aren't on the same plane, ie. the front shackle leaf mounting hole is higher up than frame hanger hole, this translates to the spring perch not being parallel to the ground, it's angled back, and thus the centering pin hole is not directly centered over the axle.

When setting up the front axle we were more concerned about caster angle than pinion angle btw and we mocked it up accordingly.

I got these axles out of another Jeep someone had done a conversion on, but they were set up for SUA.. So we had to essentially re do them for SOA. it wasn't that bad really, kept the SUA perches on, that way if i ever wanted to sell them they'd be usable in both applications. I just checked the placement of the perches laterally on the axle, not that i didn't trust the ones on the bottom, but since i didn't put those ones on i wanted to make sure it was correct. If you want i can tell you exactly how i did it

As its angled back. Do you notice if it handles rough trials better. Like bumps and small holes.

yeah the wagoneer springs are really nice, mine ride smooth but i need to get new shocks soon, still have the ones the PO put on it who knows how long ago

1/2 ton ford axles from ext cab 7?-78 D44+9"
4.56 gears & rear locker for new axles if they dont come with them or 4.10
Roll bar tie in kit
Beef up rear roll bar
Waggy springs

Home built tube fenders & front bumper
Perches?
HD boom shackles (little-0 lift)
P.U. bushings
33x10.5x15 M/T's
Axle nic nacs

Stage two.

Explorer 5.0
C-4 or C-6 Floor shifter+stage 1 or 2 shift kit w/ cooler
Dual cats into one "quiter" muffler maybe stock v8 type
Traction bars (anti wrap)
Mustang or ford racing wiring harness+ecu
Engine nic nacs (intake headers filters hoses ect)
Large high heat transfer radiator.

Stage three

Rebuild or upgrade engine parts. (Heads, port intake, cam ect)
37's
Selectable lockers if not done already
Rock sliders
Rear bumper w/ large tire carrier

awesome...sounds about what mine will stick out then, my front axle is from an early 70's ford, and the rear 9" is a 77 ford.....iirc they are the same width as yours.

to the op, if your front d44 is old enough, you can cut the "wedges" off so you can put your spring perches where you need to, i believe its 77 and newer that they were "cast" into the axle, prior to that they were welded on.

I believe you can use dodge Dakota springs to get 6+ inches per axle, however that brings up a whole new world of problems. Flipped XJ rear springs are another common choice.

The desirable years for the front 44 half ton is 76 and 77, 73-75 will work too but come with drum brakes, so a knuckle-out swap is needed to have discs.. 78 and 79 are cast in wedges and can't be removed.

i must have newer than i thought then....mine disc with welded on wedges

to the original poster, if you have wheels with the right backspacing, you could possibly still tuck the tires in with no wider than 6-7' flares...and still have decent turning radius

Here is my 95 on D44 front and Ford 9in rear on 36in tires, the flares are the 6in ones and the tire still stick out a couple inches.

Some home built tube fenders shouldn't look funky covering those extra few inches at all.
How wide are those tires?

Sorda, the best one will be 76-79 F150 extended cab since they are already leaf sprung 5 lug

OP, if you get a 5 inch backspace wheel I bet a TJ flare would cover it all

Too bad you dont have 8 lug axles or you could run H2 rims or recentered H1's.

With all those mods why not switch to a better coil/link suspension.

It's not that difficult to covert to 8 lug.. And why spend thousands on coils when leafs are working just fine?
