If the 1993 YJs have air bags, I would put the kiddo in the back seat on the passenger side and have the Mrs. ride back there also.
There has been some scuttlebutt online about kids in carseats being injured during rear end collisions. The front passenger seat folds and the front seat passengers head clobbers the poor kid in the rear.
If your Jeep doesn't have airbags, I think it would be OK to put the carseat in the front for simplicity sake.
My youngest is 46yo and never sat in a carseat so I am unfamiliar with all the nuances.
I do believe kids are much safer in them and although I want the government out of my life, I understand why they are mandatory in most if not all states.
Good Luck, L.M.
