I am thinking about building an overhead rack myself, but if I were going to go receiver-mount, I would build a two-level rack. Just a thought.

For around $59 for steel and $79 for aluminum-it's a lot cheaper to buy a hitch carrier than to build one. I have had an aluminum one for probably 6 years now that came with bicycle tire 'holders' to stand bikes up, and I remounted them right to the edge, so I have something on each side to prevent totes or grill or gas tank from sliding off-and makes an easier way to bungee everything in place. Even used it a couple years to take my Segway around!

ive been wanting to build my own rear bumper......i like alot of the ones you can buy, just want to add 2 places for a modified hitch carrier(yes 2 places ) would be alot steady and somewhat stronger than one. Ive noticed my hitch reciever bounces from side to side, this would definitely remedy that

Sportsman's Guide has one right now for $53, which is about the cost of making one w/time and labor.

Pits are awesome Jeep dogs!
Here is Brutus, 1yr old around 95lbs (still growing!) I am 6'5" 250lbs in comparison.

Here is a cheap way to build your own rack and bumpers

Just need some bamboo and twine for the rack and logs for the bumpers.

On a serious note go to harbor freight and pick up an aluminum cargo rack that fits in the hitch and holds 500lbs for $59. or at least get some ideas about the design from it. best of luck!

Yeah i have no problem building one, i know i can make a strong one, and was thinking the double decker thing
My black pit is a lab/pit mix, about the same age as yours, hes a retarded ball of fire but the best dog ever. loves the jeep, cant open the door with him around or hes in it and you cant get him out. our other dog is a pure bread white pit. about 9 months old.

Considering the V-day gift, I would definitely build her a nice cargo rack to ride in.

I would agree, and I weld in the evenings as a second job. I can hardly build one for what you can buy one for. The labor alone is more than $80.00 if you look at it that way.
I built mine, and wish I had put some trailer lights on it when I did it. That may be a good idea for you. I use mine to haul trash to the landfill every saturday, and have found many uses for it, but it started as a "I need this for fishin" project

Oh I know when I have it, it will be used for many of things. Im not not worried about how much time invested in it. Im considering the double decker idea, and trailer lights sounds like a good idea.
