Center consoule

Hey everyone. I'm trying to decide weather or not if I want to make my own center console with the typical ammo box (or whatever) or buy a nice smittybuilt one. I love having the storage and love the fact that my radio would be next to me not on my dash were I have to reach. But with the smitty built, can the radio be used while in the holder or is it just a place to
Put it when your not there? I like the look of nice and well matched look than something that was made quickly. If anyone has a picture of there set ups that would be great

I installed the Smittybuilt in mine and I love it. The radio is permanently installed in there. You will have to extend the wires for the factory location to the console. I love mine.

I have a Smittybilt one and I like it. Some people say the cupholders suck, but I haven't had any trouble with mine, yet.

I have a tuffy. I just replaced my seats and the tuffy is a bit too wide (10.5"). The smitty was 8.5" so I ordered one to replace my tuffy (from amazon). When it arrived the quality was so poor that I returned it. The welds were crap. The front of the unit where your radio would be wasn't sealed and water could get in there. None of the doors even closed properly. There was mention of a hole for the cable to MP3 player in the literature. It didn't exist in the actual unit. The two straps that were supposed to hold the seat belt up didn't fit right. It was really really crappy.

As far as I can tell all of the smittys and rugged ridge ones were all the exact same China made crap.

Do yourself a favor pay extra for the tuffy or build your own. At least order from amazon direct (not one of their sellers), because they have a great return policy.

Good luck!

Alright sounds good. I'm making my own right now for time. And when I get enough for lift tires, I'll try and save and get the tuffy at the same time. I'll post some pictures Monday on how it's coming.

+1 for the Tuffy. The difference in quality is worth it for the console.

FWIW, the Smittybilt tubular cam lock is also crap. Not going to go into details but Smittybilt uses locks with a security flaw that was discovered over a decade ago. No special tools needed to open the lock.
