Rotate your center mirror 180 degrees.
There are some guides to make your 20 gallon tank actually hold 20 gallons instead of stopping at 15.
Do a full oil/fluid tune up.
Change your spark plugs.
Replace wipers and window seals if old and not working.

Just look for small everyday things that you can do to improve the overall performance and life.

Clean all your ground connections thoroughly. This can brighten lights. help reduce electronic interference coming through the radio and cb and may prolong the life of all your accessories.

Okay then.

I'm in the same boat as you, though. Full time student, part time job, expensive car...

Unless you really want to upgrade the more expensive things just do the little things. Make sure that it will be able to last long enough to afford the more expensive parts of owning a Jeep. If you haven't already, rip out the carpet and Herculine it. It's the greatest thing ever... It literally takes 20 minutes to take everything out, scrub it with some simple green and spray out with a hose.

Some other simple things...
I bought my 91 last August and it didn't have a center console so I went to the local Army Surplus, got a .50 cal ammo canister and a locking kit for it and bolted it to the floor. You could also put a couple above your rear wheels. I've also seen lockable tool boxes thrown on there. I've also taken out my rear seat/brackets so it's more of a truck bed.

spray paint all your under body parts back to flat black. makes a night and day difference on the over all appearance of your jeep. looks new when everything is back to black.

you can also make some lockable boxes, like noted above. i have one under the hood for extra fluids and rags and three in the back behind the rear seat so i can carry ropes, tools, and spare parts without having to worry about them flying around and killing anyone in a sudden stop situation.

you can remove your center console also. i pulled mine because i like having the extra room between the seats to carry odd ball things. i just hold my drink between my legs or eat in the restaurant

you can move your license plate to somewhere else for cheap.

what kind of ideas are you looking for? are you wanting to do mods that don't serve a practical purpose? or do you want to do things that serve an every day use?

If low on money, just take a couple hours and clean the jeep inside and out, crawl under it and simply just look at things and make sure there are no leaks. Look for rust also. If you find some, address it. Make sure your tires are inflated correctly. If you have a soft top, take the windows off and clean them. Make sure you know exactly what and how much fluids are in what (engine, transmission, diffs, power steering, etc) Doing these things would certainly make me more confident about the general condition of my jeep.

rubberized undercoating works great for the underside of the wheel wells. Like the flat black, its a little more expensive by a couple bucks but lasts a lot longer.

Seat covers are not so expensive mods
Roll bar grab handles
fire extinguisher w/rollbar mount
maybe some new tools for in the back
handheld spotlight
flashlight mount for the rollbar w/a good flashlight

I just did the LED gauge light swap. Looks awesome cost me 10 bucks and an hour of tinkering. Totally worth it.
