checking oil level with a tease drop

Ok my 87 4.2 has a tcase drop. The engine sits at an angle, low at the firewall. I was wondering, Should the engine be level when checking the oil level? Like should the valve cover be level to get the proper level on the dip stick?
When I changed the oil I drained out a gallon so I put a gallon back in.

Thanks for any thoughts

Then it should be reading low if you only put a gallon back in it. Because of the oil that is left in the filter. (unless you didn't change the filter)

If the t-case drop is only an inch, the most it will change the level in the oil pan is about an 1/8" at the dipstick.

My 4.2L takes 5 1/2 qts. to fill. (with a new filter)

An easy solution would be at your next oil/filter change put in 5 1/2 quarts of oil with the vehicle sitting level. The engine will be slightly off level (down at the back). Run the engine until warm and shut it off and let it cool. Pull the dipstick and wipe it off. Reinsert the dipstick. Be ready with a marking device (possibly a sharpie). When you pull the dipstick again the oil will be at what should be the full mark. Mark the oil level with your marking device.
With a file or similar device cut a slight grove on your mark. This will be your new full mark. When you sell the Jeep advise the new owner.
Good Luck, L.M.

When I sell it? Wth
Good idea making a new mark on the dip stick. So 5 1/2 with new filter? Thinking back I put more than a gallon in. I think 5 qts put it to the top of the line.
The po has what looks like a 2" tcase drop. If I could do an sye I would get it back up but it's the 207 trans case. I'm keeping an eye out for a 237 that I can sye and get a new shaft so I can tuck that sucker back up.

If it has a 207 in it, when you find a 231 (not 237) you will also want to find an AX15 trans. The output shaft is different on the BA10/5 that is in there now compared to an AX15. So therefore the input gear on the t-case wont match.

And as far as a 2" t-case drop? That is way too low. You only need 1" for a 4" suspension lift. Seems that the PO felt that he didn't need to buy a new rear driveshaft so he just put on an insane t-case drop so the shaft would still be long enough to fit.

You need to match the horizontal line of the t-case drivetrain with the horizontal line of the pinion in the rear axle. (except for when doing a SYE and a CV rear shaft) Then the spring mounts need cut off the axle housing and the pinion gets pointed directly at the rear output on the t-case.

You see, it isn't as easy as...just throw new parts on it and go. If it were that easy everybody would be riding around in a sky-high lifted YJ.

Ok just for the record, I'm not selling my jeep dang.

For life, I have the 3 speed auto trans. I though it was 23 spline long input. And I could use any yj 231 with 23 long input.

The leaf packs seem to be stock. The rear has 1.5" blocks under the flat leafs. Was thinking 5" bds sua for the rear might match up with the soa stock leafs in the front. Got to get rid of those blocks. Figured I would work on fixing the lift right, do a 231 swap and get it up so I can measure for my new drive shafts.

OK, sorry, I just assumed that you had the stock 5spd which would be a Peugot BA10/5. With the auto TF999 it will have the correct 23 spline output shaft. The front drive shaft should be fine hooking to a 231J, just have to replace the rear, once you do the SYE.

As for the lift, I wouldn't go with spring under in the rear and spring over in the front. Although it might sit level, it will throw the steering geometry off.

You might look into OME 1.5" lift springs for SOA. or,

possibly a kit from rockyroad offroad. www.rocky-road.com/yj-soa.html.

The guys at rocky road give you a complete kit, or you can just buy what you need. I have installed 3 of their kits so far without a hitch in any of them.
