Considering a '91 YJ...high miles?

Hi everybody,

I'm going to be looking at a 1991 Wrangler and I was hoping that I could get some direction. I haven't owned a Wrangler before, but am looking forward to joining the ranks.

The Jeep is a 5-spd, I6, very stock, no lift, etc., hard and soft top, looks to be in fairly decent shape. Could only see some surface rust on the firewall from the photos and am told that it doesn't have any rust on frame/floors/body(we'll see...)
New starter, plugs, wires, and fuel lines by the dealer that is selling it.
The carfax looks clean. He says the only work that would be needed is a muffler in the near future.

One thing that concerns me is that it has just under 160,000 miles on the clock.

Can you guys give me some direction as to what I should be looking for or any problem areas I can check for specifically? Is this something that I should steer away from because of the miles? The dealer is looking for $3250.

Any advice that you can give is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Donald

i got my 91 with no rust 2"BL 31" BFG's I6-5spd and had new ehaust with just over 130k for $3200. yours has a hard top whereas mine only has a soft but i dont see it being that big of a price difference. mine also had (i removed) a system with a nice stereo head unit and two 10's. bikin and toneau cover.

I guess a vehicle up there in NY without rust commands a better price, 160k on that engine is not necessarily a concern. The only problem is that you don't know how well it has been maintained by the PO (s). That is a little pricey around here for a vehicle that old with that many miles though.

i got a steal on a 92 yj with 5 inch suspension lift, brand new 33/12.50 A/T tires with polished aluminum wheelsfor 4800. has 160000 miles on it. Runs perfect have had it for about 7 months. its all about what the engine looks like inside and how it has been maintaind. i have seen gas engines go 300000 miles before needin a rebuild because they were kept up on oil changes and other regular maintenance.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for your help! So I checked out that YJ and apparently with this dealer "NO RUST!" == driver's side floor completely rusted through!

Oh well, the search continues! I'll let you know the progress...

Thanks again,
Donald

Be patient. I looked for my jeep for a year before I finally found what I wanted.

I bet you could find a newer one like a 95 for a good price with little rust. Just keep looking.

Wait until you get 200,000 before you say high miles. my jeep has 250,000 and it runs just like the day I got it. Great
