Hi guys, fairly new YJ owner. Previously have had a CJ (still have it), TJ, and just sold a JK about a month ago. Used the profit to pick up an 89 YJ Laredo.
It has A/C and only my JK has had A/C. I don't foresee ever using it. It has a hard top that will come off (along with the doors) around April and stay off until it gets cold. I'll add a bikini top before spring (suggestions on which one?)
I can't see myself ever using the A/C, am I not thinking about something?
I have an old car w/ A/C I can drive when it's supposed to rain or be 100*.
I am also thinking I could use the money toward my front bumper/winch package I've planned.
I also hate where the vents for the A/C are located. They're in the way of back seat area access and where I want to put my CB and inverter (also, suggestions on a good CB and inverter I can direct wire?).
PO told me the A/C works good and Christmas Eve it was almost 70* here and I tried it out, seems to work fine.
Something I'm not thinking about, or suggestions?

Advertise the A/C system in the San Antonio Craigslist starting in May. Keep raising the price until August. You should get top dollar there and then. Calculate the shipping prior to running the ad.

It seems like you have thought through removing the A/C system and it is more of a problem to you than a benefit. The A/C won't be much good with the top and doors off. I don't have A/C and it gets pretty hot here in July through September. If I have to go anywhere dressed up and it's real hot during the day, I take my truck.

Have you been to the Ark Encounter in Williamstown? I was there in October with my wife. It is absolutely amazing.

Good Luck, L.M.

It gets pretty hot here in central Oklahoma with high humidity in the summer (heat indexes in the 100-110 range). That being said I don't have AC and run without doors, side and back windows. Supposedly the AC system in the YJ's sucks anyway YMMV.

Just pull it out, stick in a box and ship it to me...I will make sure it gets taken care of. In all seriousness I would leave it in for a summer then decide.
Good Luck!

Why not keep the compressor and convert it to an on board air compressor? I am in the same boat with my first Jeep (95 Sahara). I think I am going to convert it.

Thanks for your suggestions guys.
Although my mind hasn't been 100% made-up as of yet, I just can't seem to think of one single reason to keep it. If the top and doors are going to be off (judging by the effectiveness of the heater) I don't see any way the A/C unit will be beneficial.
And I'm ready to get it out of the way so I can start adding the CB and inverter under the dash.
I also don't have a real need for OBA. It's just going to be used to get to hunting/fishing/camping spots or as a really cool looking convertible. Also getting to work in the snow. I've never aired down.
Now, unless someone comes along with something I haven't thought of, and changes my mind, I'm getting rid of it. I'll first advertise it to the local Jeep club. I would rather sale it to one of the local guys/gals if at all possible. Got any ideas what a good/fair asking price would be?
Also, as I am sure I'll be asked. Will this fit any other model, or YJ only?
Thanks guys!

Sell it or convert the compressor to onboard air. I'm using the AC compressor from an XJ as onboard air. It works great. Ask an AC shop if they want to buy your refrigerant. Some places will buy old refrigerant or evacuate the system for free. It's no longer in production.

How do you do that? I have a '95 YJ with A/C, but have never used it in Michigan. Since it has a 2.5L engine, I kind of want to get rid of it and free up some power... Or keep it in a box to take up room, just for the sake of having, since I plan on still owning the jeep 20 plus years from now...

Just search the forum or google for convert air compressor to on board air. You will find some detailed write ups on the process. It looks pretty simple.

I would be interested as well, I have an 89 and was told by the previous owner that it did not work. Don't know if it is worth trying to fix or just remove it. I had thought if it was working even with the top off you could have some cool air blowing on you but don't know if they put that much out. The fan in the unit is not working.

I'm not interested in OBA, it's a great thing, i just don't need it. I don't air down. I just want the thing out of the way.
I'm going to offer it for sale to my local Jeep club.
Price suggestions?
Will it fit anything but a YJ?
Thanks guys...
