Crazy and probably stupid question

Have a 88 2.5l and motor runs great and I actually like it running 35's just put 4.88 gears in and loving it... Guess my question is what could I do to get more performance and power out of it? I head of putting 19mm injectors help any advice would be awesome

Prepare yourself...the people who think you have to swap a v8 into it are coming...
You can do a lot of things, but the easiest way to start it get the engine to breathe better. Which means to build or buy a cold air intake, and weld on better flowing exhaust.

yeah, you knew we were coming, didn't you...that's funny, but true.I love a v8..Of course what you are suggesting can't hurt anything, but how much actual power is this going to net ? Not much...Nothing wrong with a 4 cylinder for easing down the trails but it will never have much umph..

I would think that even with bigger injectors your computer is only going to allow it to spray so much

Actually its 19# injectors not 19mm injectors.A throttle body from a 4.0 is an option also. Going to an electris fan could free a up a horse or two. A low restriction muffler and a cat delete may also help.

do you even have MPFI? I didn't think they put fuel injection on Wranglers till 90 or 91. But 19# injectors you can find on eBay, local parts store or at a pick n pull. Here is a pic that will help.

And a CAI may not do to much difference but just about any parts website for Jeeps will suffice jus have to do the leg work. But a 4.0TB will help a little too. You can find some on eBay or at a pick n pull. It more cost effective then buying the $350+ ones they sell online that are 63mm.

What would you suggest for a low-restriction muffler and how does one go about getting rid of the cat? Tough sell here in California...

Its an 88, he has TBI,

ALL you can do is drop in a K&N filter, and install a header if you want to be emissions compliant.

If not, there is a way to fab up a CAI, but thats omething you would need to make yourself, then add a K&N cone filter to the end.

Thanks 2xs that's what I was thinking. And no if someone was to switch from the 2.5l TB over to the 4.0 TB it allows more air in and the computer senses that an allows the proper amount of fuel to be injected in. But TBI as far as I know you can't change out the injectors in the TB.

There is no 4.0L TBI, we had the Carberated 4.2L, when the 2.5 went PFI in 91 the 4.0L replaced the 4.2L.
The 4.0L PFI setup is not compatible with the 2.5L TBI, thr is no injector on the 4.0L throttle body.

Michael, you cannot get rid of the cat in CA and you can't even upgrade your carb without going HEI, which costs about $1200 just for parts. I have the 4.2, but I found that having someone who knows carbs adjust them properly helped tremendously, and I had a Flowmaster muffler installed. Both helped with power and MPG, but not hugely. I am thinking about going down in size from my current 33" tires when it's time for new ones.

I have the 4.0 but I can tell you what i feel works and what does not, my own experiance was confirmed by JP magazine who did a test on "power increasing mods"
My cold air intake and K&N gives no noticible improvemnet, If you do go K&N use a pre-filter. My Borla header and flowmaster cat back gave seat of the pants improvement (confirmed by JP). New MSD wires made my jeep run much smoother and pull much better(I had cheap wires before and could see the arcing at night). My Jeep has over 200,000 hard miles. I'm running 35's and can cruise at 70+ mph turning about 2000rpm's. I'd look at headers and a complete MSD system (i believe MSD makes a CARB compliant system)

List of what I've done, and it's been extremely cheap because of junk-yards.
*4.0 throttle body
*4.0 Mopar injectors
*turbo muffler, no cat (sshh)
*built my own cold air intake because I'm cheap
*advanced timing
*variable resistor on CTS so I can tune the richness of the fuel.
This stuff has been well worth it. The computer adjusts, only time the computer would be confused is if you were to run boost...which I'll probably end up doing by summer time.

Okay so with the TBI I suppose the options would be intake, exhaust, and possibly a Purple Cam if he could get lucky enough to find one...Still trying to find one for mine.

I bought a '93 with a Pace-Setter header and K&N CAI, 4.0L, AX=15.
Only reason it happened is because my '90 got totaled when some B!+(# rear-ended me.
Insurance paid out, and im swapping over all my goodies now (second link in my sig)...

OP, it's a 26 year old 4 banger with an obsolete fuel injection system. There are very few bolt on modifications you can do to get more power out of the old gal. BUT: Intake, exhaust & good ignition would be a very good start.

You've already got the hard part out of the way, which is 4:88's. Anything you do at this point will just be icing on the cake so to speak.

So header and a new exhaust and getting rid of the cat would increase my horse power? And what would you suggest for my ignition system?

Keep in mind that if you live or ever plan on living in a state that does emission testing you want to keep the cat.
