You want to lift it anyways, dont you....

Remember, with a lift comes larger tires, steering angle change, and other 16 year old parts are stressed.

I would lift it, if done right its safe.
However:
Think about it from his perspective, Would you want your kid running around in a lifted, potentially unsafe (compared to stock) vehicle?

Meh.. Kauf is like 16 and his TJ is lifted something like 3in.. He does just fine.. As long as you understand it's a jeep and not a camaro, drive with some common sense.. Lift is never a bad thing as long as it's done right

Why do you think you need to replace your suspension?

Have you given your dad a reason to not want to lift it? Other than it is a sixteen year old suspension and will have some pain in the butt moments if you do lift it. Are you a little too speedy? A few tickets? Have you already scared the heck out of him on the trail at stock height? If you answered yes to any of these you have some work ahead of you to get his comfort level back.

I am in the position of both 2xs and XJ knight. I helped my son build a 77 CJ with 2" of suspension lift, 1" body lift, and a lockright in the rear. My daughter's XJ has 3" of lift. Both of my kids get the point that lifted jeeps are not sports cars and drive like they need to be. As a dad I have confidence they are not out going zoom, zoom with them.

My suggestion is take dad out wheeling, maybe camping, and get him hooked on wheeling. Then he will want to lift it, and...

get dad involved in it. start with replacing worn parts and work from there. My dad relapsed into the hobby again once I was addicted to wrenching. He grew up messing with cars gave it up when my sister was born. Needless to say i didn't fall far from the tree. its nice to be 25 and still hanging with your dad after work and weekends. Don't push him yet he'll slowly come around if you work together on it.

With 33's, 5 speed, downhill with a tailwind i hit 85 on my way home from work today, given the right circumstances, anything is possible.
