Dana 60 or other Axle ???

A buddy wants to upgrade the axles on his YJ. He is thinking about D60 axles.
At the moment he has reinforced D30/D35 axles and 37" Boggers.
I often heard that 12 bolt (or 14 bolt ??) axles are cheaper and a bit stronger, is that true?
Is there a website with a good comparison of the different axles?

What axles would you install for 40-42" tractor tires?

In which cars/trucks were theses axles installed? Which gears do they have and did they come with manual lockers?

Thanks for your help.

Btw. that´s my buddies YJ:

Well after I added some wheel base to the YJ I would look into a 14 bolt rear and a 60 front. OR depending if you can get them rockwell axles if you want to run tires that big.. Of course as you know it more than just adding the axles other upgrades would be needed, brakes, steering, driveshafts etc..

for what he's doing d60's are fine and the gm corporate 14 bolt will be fine to, and they're dirt cheap. most guys don't use them cuz the pumpkin is so big, older gm have right side drop front axle though. but he's gonna want to upgrade the driveline if he's going this far don't ya think.

why wouldn't you just take a full size blazer or bronco to build mudders out of? just curious, they make better mudders than jeeps do.

agreed with the above posts.

40"-42" tires on that rig will be sittin way to high and unstable.

need for stretching the wheelbase highly recommended! prolly no need for rockwells unless he's got plans for running some serious horsepower under the hood. d60 and corp. 14 bolt are a great combo and can handle some hard abuse. these rears can be found under 1 ton pickups....and the corp. 14 bolt can also be found under 3/4 ton pickups.

here's some links for ya to check out:

grab a cup of coffee...or a half rack o brew....and settle in for a good read. lot's and lot's of info on the 14 bolt and front dana 60 in those links.
