Do I need title??

If I replace my tub, do I need to buy one with a title??
I thought I could just replace my tub and use my old title, but as I keep reading I'm seeing you probably need the title for the newer tub.

I would just transfer the old vin plates on to the new tub.

Your main visual plate that any LEO will look at is attached to the winshield frame so that will transfer over automatically... As for the one on the firewall just drill out the rivets carefully and transfer it to the new tub and paint the whole firewall tag included making it look like it was never touched... I dought anyone will break your horns over it.. Worse case carry a reciept showing you bought the tub..

I agree. Just use your old plates. The one from the windshield frame and the one from the firewall. It's all about what can be registered. When that fat old lady from the DMV waddles out to the parking lot to check your rig, she just needs to see a vin plate somewhere.

ROFLMAO... i gotta go get a picture now... the DJ was originally a govvie vehicle, so the VIN is basically just a serial number on a sticker on the dashboard... well... my dashboard got fire and the sticker burned up.

made a new dashboard out of diamond plate, and come next state inspection, the guy wanted to see the VIN, and the both of us looked everywhere for a VIN for about 15 minutes and came up empty handed... told him I'd be back in an hour and took a little trip ...

went to the unit supply room, borrowed the key engraver, and 10 minutes later...

I had a VIN on the windshield frame. (yes, there's several more numbers to it...) Drove back to the inspection shop, the guy matched the number to the registration and gave me my safety sticker

Yes, there is a plate to the right of the master cylinder that has the Vin on it as well which has standard rivets.. Just transfer that over and your windshield frame which contains the Vin plate with the "special" rivets and call it a day.. In my past experiences, if you make it known that you did the swap, then you open a can of worms...I would make sure you register your complete Jeep if you can before doing the swap to be on the safe side.. Not sure how Florida is but here in NY, DMV never physically checks any vehicle...especially older ones..

VIN on the windshield isn't normal (I posted it because it's a weird funny quirk that's unique to my DJ)...

you should have a plate attached to your dash, and another one attached to the firewall... both riveted on with "marked" rivets. If you swap the tub you will no longer have a bona fide "numbers matching" jeep (I seriously doubt that would ever be an issue.) there's a bajillion cars on the road with mismatched numbers, and as long as none of those VIN s come up as being reported stolen in the past, I don't really see why it would be an issue, but if it is, the "legal" fix for it is to NOT try and remove or replace any VIN tags, but just keep the receipts, and if you wanna really be on the safe side, type up a bill of sale and have it notarized when you both sign it. I have never once seen a clerk or a mechanic at an inspection station check any VIN tag other than the one on the dash though...

I'm with everyone else on this the VIN #'s on alot of older jeeps are mismatched from buying parts off of other jeeps. I've had CJ's with parts off of other jeeps with different VIN's on them and the only # the inspectors ever looked at was the dash. If it was me I would change the VIN plate and keep all my reciepts.

Firewall yes but the windshield tag is not attached to the dash, it's riveted to a plate that is then riveted under the wiper motor, both of which have the star rivets.. When you remove the windshield frame the vin plate goes with it.. Trust me i have a complete windshield assy sitting here from another YJ and it's vin plate is with it.. The only other tag on the tub is the one on the firewall and that has a standard rivet..

Keep it simple and just switch the tags.

too easy then keep the whole windshield and fuggedaboutit...

I still think you shouldn't try moving the firewall tag over. Running different VIN's is legal anywhere AFAIK, the title goes by the dash (or windshield on a YJ...), and the only reason admitting to changing parts out opens a can of worms is because of the stolen part market (the DMV kids don't particularly enjoy contorting themselves around to verify all the VIN numbers so they can check if any are from stolen vehicles), and mismatched VIN's are a little suspicious (though the older the vehicle the less suspicious it is). A relocated VIN tag however, is much more than a little suspicious, and could very likely result in much more hassle (and maybe fines) than a mismatched number would...

normal rivets or no, I wouldn't mess with moving tags. It's basically fraud...

I know my windshield frame was replaced by previous owner. So I just checked my 95 yj. Looks to me that vin is attached to bracket that is bolted to windshield frame. Now the question is did previous owner transfer plate?
