I love the square headlights in the 75 years that they've made these jeeps only 7 years of them have square headlights. Of coarse all vehicles made in that time frame had square headlights.
As a 16 yo in 1994 the yj was my dream jeep. As a 30 something it's been a blast finding one, restoring and building it the way that I only dreamed of back then. As time goes on the square headlight not only looks better and better it defines an era for my generation just as the cj had before it. Yes I have loved the uniqueness of the yj since they rolled it out. To me its the last clip to actually look good especially when you include the front bumper. Never liked the tj or later clip/hood/bumper iterations, not balanced, kind of squished down, in many ways those changes made them look even less like the original military inspired vehicle they are, the yj has more in common with the original imo and its uniqueness will only add to its nostalgic value as time goes on.
I whole heartedly agree. The YJ, is the last jeep that shares heritage with the bantam/willys jeeps. As a kid in 1987 I was not fond of the square headlights. My fav jeep, was a 1976 CJ-7. Mostly because my cousin had one. And the year I was born. I soon realized,( and I think I might piss ALOT of people off by saying this) the YJ is the best jeep EVER produced. Minus the fact lockers are not a factory option. The best of all worlds. Also imo, the square light gives off a better field of light. Take it for you want. I absolutely love my YJ, and would not trade it for anything.
I've just acquired a 90 YJ and I really like the look and the lights do give a great pattern (especially since I put in an upgrade wiring harness with relays). Wanted a CJ in the 70s when I was a teen, now have a YJ in my 60s as a backup/fun vehicle.
I've always grew up around Jeeps. (3rd generation Jeeper). When growing up my grandfather had a 53 cj3b father had a 74 cj5. And the beach town we had a family summer house at used YJ islanders to pull trams up and down the boardwalk I always thought they were the coolest things. My first jeep was a tj. It was a lemon. I replaced it with a YJ that I owned for 8 years. Then I sold if and a few years later I bought my current YJ. Imo yj's are the last of the true Jeeps
No offense to anyone but the marker lights in the front fenders of the TJ are the real design tragedy. The ONLY place I've ever heard a negative comment about the shape of a headlamp is on this forum. People in person tell me how awesome my jeep (YJ) looks.
I don't understand to motive associated with this thread topic... Obviously we like the square lamps! Great to see all the positive feedback though. Great group here, keep on Jeepin YJ style!
My buddy told me my YJ wasnt a real Jeep because the original Jeep had round lights. I told him his JK wasnt a real Jeep because the original Jeeps were leaf sprung. For that reason I say that the YJ is the last real Jeep but I don't discriminate. I make room for all Jeeps at my table.
I don't care what shape the headlights are, they work.
I really wanted a CJ-7, but the price for one around here in fair condition is ridiculous. My YJ was available for a ridiculously low price, so I bought it.
I like how the square headlights are unique to this one era of Jeeps. The YJ to me is the last of the Jeeps to have the "tractor" feel. Plus, the whole square look fits the Jeep as a whole. Square looks meaner IMO.
Not just the headlight.. dont see too many soccer moms in a yj.. its loud rides like a truck which I love.. no airbags which I think airbags are dumb in a offroad vehicle.. yj has a better dashboard.. in the end there all jeeps and the are your creation so its a labor of love and jeep guys understand that.. thats why we all try to help each other..
:rant:Really? yeah, it's fun to joke about it, but seriously? I don't buy a vehicle because of the shape of the headlights. I have never heard anyone discussing the performance or capability of any Jeep and then say, "Well it's a good thing he had those headlights or he wouldn't have made it up that hill or thru that mud hole."
I like the overall look of the old CJ style - the round headlights and rounded fenders looked good. The boxy shape of the YJ fits with the 'RECTANGLE' headlights.
As was said... "as long as they work"!
(rant over... thanks)
If I took the number of times I have considered whether rectangular headlights are better or worse than circular ones and multiplied it by 2, I would still have zero.
As a youngster I knew I wanted a jeep never the thought came to mind wether I'd get round or square when I bought my 1st which was a TJ. then after almost ten years I got the bug again and I'm on my second YJ '94 4banger.

This is me also. Except when I was younger I NEVER wanted rectangle headlights. Finally time to get a jeep again and I couldn't resist the retro YJ.
