Dome (map) light on the Factory Sound bar - hookup

I have 94' that came from the factory without the sound bar....I have bought a used factory sound bar and hooked everything up expect for the dome light.....for the life of me I can not figure out how to hook up the dome light......the speakers where fine because they ran thru the connector but the dome light just has a red wire and ground wire coming out of the harness.......I have spent a good amount of time under the dash trying to find the hot wire to hook to but have not found it yet.....I thought about splicing into the courtesy lights but they have a pink and yellow and not sure how to go about it.....then again not sure if that is the way it needs to be hooked up since the light has a switch on the bar...........anybody have any suggestion or have ran across this??

I have googled it and search the forum but have not been able to find anything that helps.

THANKS

Do you want it to come on when you open the door or switched by the courtesy lights. The red wire will eb hot black for ground so you can splice it in to what ever source you want to control the light. Just because they are different colors doesn't matter.

Yeah sometimes when you get accesories you will find that but the draw of the light is good with the size wire supplied. The other circuit needs that size. And yes wired to the courtesy lights is probably the right choice.

I'm kinda in the same boat, picked up a used sound bar off of a '95 sahara. I won't be installing the sound bar until after the winter when the hard top comes off. When I look at the wires coming out of mine, I've got the 4-conductor harness which is for the speakers, then the one for the dome light. It has two wires, a yellow and a pink. What I assumed was one was for the door plunger switch, and the other was wired to 12v+, and that it grounded through the soundbar itself.

Typically vehicles will use the ground as the switched power, while the HOT lead always remains hot. The door jamb switches are where the switched power is, with the roller switch being wired in parallel to the jamb leads.

The quickest and easiest way is just to run the leads down to the courtesy light and splice them in, since that should be switched power with the jamb and roller switch. The pink is hot, while the yellow should be ground (easiest way to tell is to use a test light and ground it on the body somewhere).

You mentioned the bar has a switch in the lights themselves. In a stock configuration, that will not work with the switched power, since the ground is the switched power for the vehicle, whereas the bar uses the HOT as the switched power. You will need to do a little re-wiring so that the ground becomes the switched power, but it shouldn't take long (basically, swap the positive and negative leads that run to the switches).

Then run your leads down to the courtesy light.

OK I did a little playing at lunch....I got the connector that hooks the dome light on my hard top and ran the red to the pink and the ground to the yellow.....worked every time the courtesy lights worked.....I also just ran the red to the pink and the grounded to the chasis and the lights only worked with the switch on the bar...so the only way I can think of getting to use both would be to install another switch that control whether the gound grounds with the courtesy lights or grounds to straight to the chasis.....probably over kill so I am just going to splice into the courtesy light on passengers side....it has been fun chasing this down!!

Xpress.....basically what you described I understood until the last part....I can swap the red and black and achieve what I wanted to do with the switch?? can explain further......for a man that does not know anything about electrical

I think you may be overthinking it. Try running the red to the pink and ground to the chassis, and see if it works when the courtesy light should. From what you're describing it seems like it's supposed to be red to constant 12v+, yellow to courtesy light lead, and ground the whole thing to the chassis.

Well not really over thinking just was trying to get a way where the lights would work with the courtesy lights AND with the switch on the bar BUT can't be done unless I install another switch.

With the red to 12V+ and ground to chassis the lights only work with the switch on the bar.

What I did is spliced into the courtesy light on the passenger side....red to pink & black to yellow......works with door open and roll switch.

Eventually I will add another switch to be able to run the ground thru the courtesy OR run it to chassis....the reason I would want it this way if for when I put my hard top on.....no need for 2 dome lights BUT I have other mods I will do before this though....just something else I would like to have the option for.

Thanks for everyone input....it helped me work thru it...I know just enough to be dangerous!

Give me some time, I have to re-think this through. I typed that up when I was tired LOL.
