Don't listen to sketchy neighbors!

New "body man" moves in about a month ago..Im out in the drive working on my jeep and he comes over and introduces himself and says i can do this and that..
so i was like great i got a little help now,i even offered to pay in cash or brew..his choice..
so anyway if you look @ my build thread you can see what im talking about.
i started removing interior and everything in the way..all this myself..
he comes over afterwords works for 15minutes...dissappears for 2-3 hours...this went on for 4 days...finally i said..look dude...@ this rate my jeep wont be done till 3 months from now...and o yeah he couldnt weld burned holes in sh!#@,was welding beads without a mask..wasnt cleaning surfaces before trying to weld them...hell even i know better than that...an i have never even picked up welder b4..welding near my left rear corner with NOTHING over the gas tank,or neck..
So finally myself and Jo(wife)said F@#$ this...she was really pissed...even more then me lol..she said get this bum outa here NOW!..any of you who are married knows what a ticked off wife looks like...was just thankful it wasn't @ me lol
I asked him to leave nice and polite like...then he says well id like $75 for what he had done...i said sure no problem..then he says I want it tomorow.i say well sorry bud but i wont have it till thrusday..(3 days later)
he started getting mad....and says i want my money or else i know where your jeep is...really MFer? I say you touch my jeep or so much as look @ it funny and Im gonna turn COUNTRY on your A##@ real quick...
What a douch..sorry for the launguage or insuation there in..just had to vent..
Anyways i called my proffesional welder/fab guy and only after 2 days its almost back together..i guess hindsight really does suck lol

Wow, what a great (or not so great) lesson. I am a professionl mechanic, and am very carefull who I offer help to or from for that matter. I HATE working on freinds, family, or neighboors cars. Such a recipe for fire. Sometimes all the right intensions are there, but go so south so fast. Honestly I don't even want them at my shop.

But ironically enough I LOVE offering advice to anyone who will listen.

It's like that no matter what you do. I've always got people asking me for computer help or welding or other stuff I can do. I don't like doing it, even if I'm paid, because I don't want to mix my professional life with my personal life.

Yeah family/friends want computer work done from me free all the time. Most of them never even want to pay for the parts.

I get pissed when someone threatens to do something to my Jeep. Never mess with someone's Jeep.

I am the "Family repair man", everything. Plumbing, AC, electrical, auto, computer.. (my father owned a repair shop and rental properties so I had to learn everything as a teen) and I hate every second of it.. mainly because the all expect me to work for free.. hours at a time.. on my days off, and get pissy if I want to enjoy my family or Jeep because I'm being selfish.

Makes me glad that I have a good relationship with my uncle, he's helped me out with the Jeep more times than I can count, and I always return the favor if he needs help with his.

I had a guy tell me he would put a shackle lift on for me... I fronted him a little bit of cash because I'm a relatively nice guy (or just ignorant) and well I guess it was the latter of The two .. My jeep never got a shackle lift and the guy dropped my jeep off and told me to meet him... He wasn't there but thanks god my jeep was.. He moved away and still owed me the money ... Funny thing is I saw him pull in to his new place a few days ago lol .. Small town ...but I figure it's a lost cause to me it just seems unreal to try and screw someone over

Reminds me of a couple women talking

One said to the other, "we had a flat in the rain last night and it was so wonderful. My husband was able to get out the spare and change the tire all by himself. I'm so proud of him".

The other woman says, Yes, I'm proud of mine too. He doesn't know how to change the tire but he can afford to have someone come and do it while we sit where it is dry.

Moral, sometimes, it isn't good to be able to do it. I know I am in that boat with vehicles, home repairs and the computers, both at work and at home/friends/relatives. And it isn't just there, I get roped into going through Remote desktop and fixing them remotely if I can't talk them through it after hours & hours.

Now, if we could just get all that KARMA that they say is out there, I could sit back and be waited on the rest of my life.

Exctaly, Im 18, and my dad is in mantinece at IBM and we flip house on the side. I feel like theres literally nothing he cant fix, so I always go to him.

Its how much I know compared to most people my age, not trying to sound self-centered and all

If I have to fix a computer once for a family member i install a remote desktop program so I don't have to drive and burn my gas.

I require payment for parts up front, labor when its finished. If I don't get paid that's fine but next time they need help I'm always busy.

I hate to hear that happened BruceandJo.........I do work for people all the time, and when it comes time when I need something, they usually aren't there for me.
I am a heat/ac service tech by trade and I weld in the evenings and weekends. Needless to say there is always some free work to do for someone.......It does get old sometimes, but I have also met some really good friends doing things this way. You gotta take the good with the bad sometimes, and learn from them both

Tell him you want $300 to fix all the booger welds and other issues his "$75" help caused.
Then call the cops since he threatened to steal your stuff.

I wouldn't say all that, that is some of the most honest stuff I have had done, but you can get burned from a business too. I go behind just as many inexperienced "service techs" from a regular business as I do friends of friends repairs. Granted the later is usually more "boogered"

My best advice is to use common sense. No one knows everything, and if you don't have someone you trust vouch for a "buddy" or you do not have proof of what they can/can not do, approach with caution

I guess I need to be a better judge of character...
Jo tells me all the time not to trust so easy...lol..I try and give people the benefit of the doubt..
Like the pro welder i refered to earlier...nicest guy in the world...and cuts me a deal every time he does work for me...he usually charges 60 an hour, but only charges me 35..I dont work for free and dont expect anyone else to either...
Anyway now I'm stuck with a welder lol...s'ok though i found a gent last nite that would do a trade for some spiffy lil 15" turbine style rims that would look nice on my jeep..(stocks on right now)
and as far as the "threat",found out that the dudes cookie aint quite fully baked..drugs and wat not...
Appreciate all your comments and advice
thanks

i feel your pain, i had a shop repair my year frame and install a 4 inch suspension lift, they said it would take a month to do so i left it with them----long story short 13 months latter i picked up my jeep only to find out that they had my rear shackels in the wrong place and now they are resting on my leafs....
i went there and they said they would redo my rear shackles but thats been 2 weeks ago and they still haventdone it yet,.....but i did not leave it with them this time it is here with me..
i could fix it myself but i think they should,, i have paid them for there service and it was,nt done rite..
