Angry driveability in winter?

i was wondering how everyones jeep wrangler was in the winter? i took mine up north to canada to moncton nb this past weekend and sun morning on my way home i hit a cpl spots where the road was frosted and both times my rear end turned around on me sending me into a ditch. ended up pulling my rear tire off the bead just enough to hear it leaking (got that fixed for 40 bucks) the 2nd time didnt do much that i could tell. however the jeep seems to pull slightly to one side or another now and not by a whole lot either just slightly. didnt notice any pull before this happened. also my breaks also started to pull to one side afterward as well. i was just wondering how well does a wrangler do in the snow? if this is going to be a ongoing problem with no solution in sight im afraid the jeeps gotta go. 3 vehicles is 1 too many and my vette aint going to go anywheres as far as im concerned. on the other hand i like my jeep and always wanted one and would rather not part with it. any help or suggestions on how to make this road worthy in the winter would be helpfull. so far everyone ive talked to has said they are known problems in the winter i hope this aint true.

ps jeep is laid up in mass right now due to my sending unit taking a crap and pissing out gass all over the place so i cant exactly look into anything until it comes back probly this weekend or weekend after next.

Hmmmm...well I don't have any experience with my jeep with snow since I just got it over the summer but I did own a Bronco II (SWB) and they are little light in the behind.

With the Bronco II,I kept two sandbags one on each side in the back to give it a little additional weight.Good set of snow tires if it's going to be snowing a great deal or chains. Since SUV's,Jeeps,and Pick-Ups center of gravity is not like a car.

With these babies you kinda have to go extremely slow!!!!

Snow to snow good traction,ice to snow...not so good.

it sounds like you hit some ice, and you drove off the road... duh. if you hit ice, chances are you're going to slip and slide. and it doesn't matter what kind of car you drive what kind of tires you have or how good of a driver (or bad) you are. if you hit some ice its gonna mess up your day. *begin rant* I laugh at all those 4x4 Suvs that fly past me in the snow at 70mph in the snow, then 3 miles down the road there they are in the ditch scratching their heads wondering what happened. not every car has 4 wheel drive, but they all have 4 wheel stop, and its not about how fast you can go or how many cars you can get in front of, its about going from point A to point B in one piece. *end rant* from the sound of your story you were driving beyond the capabilities of the vehicle vs. the conditions of the road and if the first time you spun out didn't show you that I hope the second time did. I'm just glad the story didn't end with "and then this stupid minivan was right there and I spun into it and now I've got to wash the blood off my bumper'

Thats good advice. Add weight, slow down and don't forget a winter survival kit. Blanket, tow strap, power bars, gloves, chains, flares and anything else you might think of.

I play with mine in the snow and it does just fine, well once you get used to its odd little quirks and mannerisms that is Then again I also play in snow as opposed to the random patches of ice you mentioned. As far as playing in packed snow or powder the Jeep does great! Just pop it into 4 maybe drop your tire pressure a bit and you’ll be unstoppable.

Heck, yesterday I ran up to the mountains and got to recover a Civic and 2 AWD Subarus which I found stuck in ditches on the side of the road. It was kind of funny, I pulled up to the stuck vehicle, rolled down my window, and the driver said “hey, any chance you’d want to pull me out?” (for some reason they saw my Jeep and automatically assumed I had a tow strap and was capable of pulling them out ) To which I replied “Hell yeah I would!” Man I love showing off my Jeep.

thanx for the replys guys i was going pretty good was maybe 5 to 10 km over the 110km speedlimit at the time but is what scares me is i had an easier time in a 2 wheel drive suburban with summer tires in worse weather then my 4 wheel drive jeep with all seasons did but what i came accross in the road wasnt even ice is was more like snowy frost it was only in certain spots i had driven 2 hours with no troubles or worry. it seemed almost like it was unavoidable when i seen the white patch i imediately let off the gass so there wasnt much torque to the wheels that would make the tires spin too much especially when it was a strait away id kinda understand a bit if it was on a turn or something where i turned the wheel. i been thinking today and yesterday what about the possability of a brake grabbing? if one of my brakes was grabbing couldnt that cause that on the slightest slickness? my thinking is the pass side front brake grabs and holds tire still when over the sluch ice or snow and when it hits the bare pavement it grabs the road and the rear lets loose. ive never had anything like this happen before in anything else i drove in the winter im from ny so im use to driving in snow and ice and have driven everything from trans ams to suvs to trucks and never had this happen especially over a small patch of frost in the road its kinda leading me to believe somethings wrong in denmark. but i have others at work and such telling me wranglers are shit in incliment weather even heard some say they would rather walk then drive one in winter. im not saying all your advice isnt good but just that something isnt jiving here with me on how this happened like it did. this also isnt the first time the ass end has let loose its also let loose on me on just wet pavement but not as bad and was controlable. seems to only dio it on wet pavement if u hit a bump in the road or something and the jeep acts like i get a lot of wheel hop and then fishtails a bit.

Short Wheel Base

A Surburban is almost as long as a school bus can't compare
the two.Find another SWB vehicle to compare the
Wrangler to....like the Ford Bronco II and they both handle
the same on ice.

If your still shaken up...I'd trade it in for an SUV that you feel
comfortable with...you have the 2007 FJ Cruiser and the Xterra.

Two decent 4x4's to choose from..............

My YJ drive just fine in the winter the fridgid 70F temps of West Central Florida dont afffect it at all.

Its been pritty bad here in washington this last week and I have to put mine in 2wd just to have alittle fun. You may have something wrong with your rearend. I would have some one look at it very close.

The short wheel base in the wrangler combined with the light weight can make it a little interesting at times on snowy roads. A little more seat time in the Jeep and you will get a feel for it. It will come around on you very quickly as you just found out. In a suburban you can play around and power slide through the corners. Not a good idea in the Jeep! Nobody ever said the Jeep was the safest, most comfortable, or most practical vehicle on the road. If you want that get a volvo.

I would look into you thought on the brakes grabbing a bit. This certainly could throw you into a spin if the conditions are right.

thanx for the replys i will have someone look into the rear end and the brakes is there anything specific about the rearend i should have looked into? also the brakes was pulling to one side on the way home however this didnt start until after i went into the ditch so i think somehow the going into the spin caused this but will havta be looked into. it could just been that i didnt notice it until afterwards for whatever reason. does anyone run with studded tires? and do they help much with the short wheelbase?

does it have a locker in it? All my jeeps have done great in the snow, except the full time front and rear locked one. that was scary.. I knew something was wrong when I was just keeping up with the Porsche boxster next to me who was going sideways at 3 mph....lol

Wow... you got a lot of harsh replies... I think some of the best though was from daddyjeep. The Jeep does tend to be light, and I found it a little loose when driving it. I am from Michigan, so lots and lots of snow experiance...(which I would totally disregard any advice from anyone living in FL, etc... about snow handeling...) I went to Lowes, and spent 15 bucks on 2 sand bags that sit in the rear near each tire. I feel much more in control, and have had no problems since. Good luck, and glad you or anyone else didn't get hurt. And don't sell the Jeep...you'll regret it later...(June, July)

the replys might have been a bit harsh i guess but its all good i can take a lil criticism and although harsh it is good advice. i dont know if it has lockers in it or not i just bought it a few months ago and dont know verry much about vehicle history other then the maintenance like oil changes and such was kept up on pretty regularly. the guy i got it from never mentioned anything about lockers or any trouble with winter driving. i also have decided to keep the jeep i just gotta find a way to keep the thing on the road. i have all seasons on the jeep now might look into a set of studded tires and see if that helps any. i think i got some cinder blocks around here someplace ill throw those in the back as well. someone also told me to keep it in 4 wheel in the winter as the control in the snow is like night and day between 2 wheel and 4 wheel not sure how true this is but i figure it makes sence and might give it a try.
