Early YJ Build/Manufacture Dates by Production Number

I have been doing some research on 1990 YJ's and am looking for the production numbers that were built in late October 1989. I was wondering if folks would be willing to post the build date (mm/dd/yyyy) and production number of their YJ's, especially if they were built in late October '89. I have searched for quite a while on the web and haven't come up with much. I am hoping to pick up a 1990 YJ that was manufactured during this time period, but most ads only post the vin, not the build date. Thanks in advance!

Where do you find the build date and production number? Why is this information important? I know from my VIN that my 90 was built in Canada.

I believe the build date is on the driver's side door frame with other information like the paint color code. If memory serves me right, that is where it was located on my '89 Wrangler. I have a friend who was born on October 25, 1989 and am trying to buy a Wrangler that was built on that date. Thanks!

Btw, from the research I've done, the production number is the last 6 digits of the VIN. In this case, 2J4FY49T6LJ500173, the production number would be 500173.

I checked the door frame, nothing is there. The VIN is imprinted on a plate above the dash, that's all I could find. I think trying to find one built on a specific date is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Maybe you could contact Chrysler to find out what range of VINs were issued in October 89.

2J4FY29T1LJ517340 Sticker = 10 / 84

This may help some…..

The sticker was on the driver's door, not the frame.
The six digit sequence number is somewhat bogus.
They never built 100,000 YJs in any build year so six positions were not needed.
My guess would be to drop the first position '5'.
Other makes use a letter in the first (sequence position) and roll over to the next letter when 99,999 go out the door.

New models usually hit around August of the previous year.
So an assembly plant retool would be early July.
Roughly 57,600 YJ's were built in 1990.
57,600 units divided by 12 months is 4,800 units per month.
July to Oct is four build months.
4,800 X 3 months = 14,400
4,800 x 4 months = 19,200

Roughly Sequence numbers 514400 thru 519200 would be October.
My sequence number (above) is 517340.
My build date would be apprx Oct 18th.

Just throwing it out there, shoot it down as you see fit.

p.s. why did Chrysler put the build sticker on a door held on by two little nuts?
I see almost as many doors on craigslist as jeeps.

Sorry for the delay, I kept forgetting to check my door. To my surprise, the VIN on my door actually matched my Jeep, lol. Anyway, my production number would be 530609 according to my VIN and production date is 3-90. Good luck with your search.

Happy New Year and thanks for the info. It'll be fun to see how the search goes and if I'm able to locate one for sale from that date. Thanks again!

Sorry to be of no help, but my '90:

3-90 (build date)
LJ530398 (last 8 of VIN).

Perhaps you could put this in the TOO NEW section?

Regardless its recently been totaled, derivable but totaled....

CyndiB & 2xs build numbers kind of verify my estimate that October builds were between 14000 & 19000, roughly.

They would have been putting out 160 units a day.
If the plant was down for a week back then it could throw the sequence off by over a thousand.

What you need is someones last five with a Sep89 build and a Nov89 build to lock it down.

Yeah, I've been in touch with Chrysler and will see if I can get a few build dates for that time period. It'll definitely narrow my search. Raoul, thanks for compiling those numbers and to CindiB and 2xs for the help as well.

I was able to get another build date from a guy that's selling a 1990 Wrangler here in Utah. It's production number is 512843 and the build date is 9/89.

Since there's so much to consider when buying a 24 year old vehicle, especially since you live in a state where it snows and you have to contend with rust, I would think that something built the same year she was born would be special enough. Good luck with your search.

I have started up a blog to record the interesting adventure I have embarked on in trying to locate a Wrangler built on a particular day. It is located at jeepquest.blogspot.com. Any other 1990 YJ owners who would be willing to post their last 5 of the VIN and the build date would really be a help. Thanks!

You know, when I first read what you were trying to do I thought 'no way' this could be done.
But, you learn something new everyday.

Forget the VIN.
Chrysler has an MDH included on the door certificate.
MDH = Month Day Hour

I already knew my Wrangler was built in Oct of '89.
My MDH is 101623 ( my vehicle rolled off the assembly line on Oct 16th at 11pm)
Now all you need to find is an MDH between 102501 and 102524.
There would have been 140 to 160 such vehicles.

Good luck.

Raoul, thanks for the additional info. I know it is a crazy "quest", but I think with as many folks out there who like Wranglers, and folks like yourself who are willing to take the time to send some info, I think it might be "do-able". I'll be keeping an eye out for the MDH. I didn't realize that it was the month, day, hour. Thanks again for the help.

I've found a couple for sale that are probably pretty close to the date I'm looking for, 518657 and 518809. I've e-mailed both sellers to see if they'll provide the build date and MDH code.

I'm slowly narrowing down the list of VINs. Got more feedback today from Billy at Town and Country Motors. Production number 519875 was built in November 1989. I have updated jeepquest.blogspot.com with the information and posted a few pictures of some Wranglers with production numbers in the right area. Hopefully I'll hear back from some more of the folks I've e-mailed.

Fabrokoner...Thanks for the pics! Chrysler doesn't seem to have much build info for the early YJ's, so any pictures and info are much appreciated.

Jeep Quest Completed

CyndiB, thanks for the post. I was thinking it would take a bit longer than it did. The crazy part is that not only was the Jeep in the same state, it was in the town I live in!

Raoul, LOL...I knew you'd say something like that! I sure do appreciate the tips and hints you provided along the way. It helped to narrow the search down considerably.

I'll be working on typing up the whole story from start to the present and posting it on Jeep Quest. I might even have to change the blog's name now!
