Just got my first Jeep and the rear end is junk. Do I need to match the gear ratio with the front and if so how do I figure out what the rear ratio is. I can't read the tag on the axle. Jeep is a 1989 Wrangler, 6 cyl, automatic
An easy way to check is to open it up and count the teeth on each gear and divide them. Say the ring gear(large) has 43teeth and the pinion gear(small) has 11 you would divide 43/11=3.90
my 87 with a 4.2 and an auto has 3.07's and there was a tag attached to the cover.
