Flat towing a yj

Transfer case in nuetral or just the tranny?

I heard transfer in neutral tranmission in any forward gear. I will be flat towing mine in August for Jeep Week in ocean city Md

Transfer case in neutral and tranny in first believe it or not. Would make me nervous to leave it in first.

I've never towed my Jeep but I'm going to start now that my new daily driver has a tow package. Been reading a lot about how to do it. If your not using a trailer, then all 4's is the way to go.

I tow behind a MH and have always put the transfer in neutral and the tranny in first. I've read any forward gear. I always check buy starting the engine and letting the clutch out to make sure transfer is in neutral. The ignition key should be left where the steering is un-locked but not all the way to the start/run position.

I've probably have a few thousand miles like with no issues.

Or you could remove your rear drive shaft and no rack up mileage

T-case in neutral, trans in gear. Confirmed by owners manual and my transmission shop.

Towed all of them many miles behind motorhomes no problem.

I'd be a little skeptical about putting our t-cases in Neutral, since they don't have a "true neutral", but I'm paranoid about stuff

I tow my Y J all over. we live in Ensenada and the wife has family in El Cajon when we are up there we stay in the Circle R.V. park on Main st.
I used to have a 55 Willis Show truck its the only 4x4 I ever owned I didn't flat tow. my yj looks a lot like your's it's red and black

Related question: how much power do you need to tow a yj? Can a 2014 4cyl patriot tow my yj?

It doesn't have a "True Neutral" point like the newer NP231 t-cases do. It's kind of inbetween 4 high and 4 low with ours.

You can tow a semi trailer with a 4 cylinder Patriot. Is it a good idea? No. Will you burn up your torque converter and possibly damage most of the driveline components? Highly likely.

You're going to need more power than what a Patriot can offer. Something that can easily tow about 3500lbs (most 6 cylinder gas engines 3.5L and bigger can tow these loads nowadays).

My YJ doesn't rack up miles on the odometer unless the key is on.

You have an electronic speedometer, the 1987-1990 YJ's have a mechanical speedometer that is driven by a cable that connects to the tailshaft of the t-case. Whenever the driveshaft is turning, so is the speedometer, even with the key off.

All you have to do is unscrew the speedo cable from the t-case. Not that big of a deal. Then no miles recorded.

I can't flat tow my '95. When I get 1/2 way through a turn the ft. wheels go back straight. I do have a 4" lift, locker in ft, 4:10 gears, and a high steer setup. Anyone have any suggestions. Someone said to take the ft. angle shims out, to change the caster. I'm not sure that will help. Any suggestions will help.
