Ford 8.8 question

An you use an 8.8 without limited slip? Or is it better to have limited slip?

A locker would be better than a LSD or open diff, an LSD would be better than an open diff. Only problem with getting an 8.8 with LSD is that chances are the clutches are worn so it may need to be rebuilt. If you've found a good 8.8 with open diff I wouldn't hesitate to buy it and add a locker later.

The limited slip rear is better to have than an open geared rear end, but it depends on what you want to do with it. The limited slip works with clutches, when 1 wheel slips it transfers the power to the other side as well to make both wheels spin equally. But it is limited. If you would have 1 tire up in the air and the other against a rock, naturally the one in the air is going to spin. When the power transfer takes place and it feeds power to the other wheel against the rock, ONLY if that wheel can move will it work. If that wheel cant move because of the rock, then the clutches will slip and the wheel in the air is the only 1 that will spin.

And if sometime down the road you want to put a Spartan locker in, the case with the limited slip isn't big enough to install the locker. Full, selectable lockers are different because they replace the case. So, an open case is desired if you want to install a Spartan locker at some point. If not, then go with the limited slip.

I have a limited slip 8.8 in mine, and it works for me, I do mild rock crawling and trails. Very little mud.

The only one I can find at the pick and pull this week is a open axle but it's 50 bucks all you can carry today

I myself would take the open rear. That way you can put a Spartan locker in it if you feel the need to. But make sure its a 31 spline axle. A LOT of the open rears are only 28 splines. The 31 spline axles are a larger diameter than the 28.

I would not put a drop in lunch box locker in, the stock open case is too weak, per all the ford guys I spoke with.. you want a full case locker in. I used a Detroit in mine..

I have been running a Spartan in mine, and other then the NOISE on the road, it has held up great in the dirt and on rocks.
I also beat the crap out of my Jeep, with no issues.

If I was going to do it all over again, i would get a selectible locker, its just too swirley on the road, and the Spartan has an odd quirk of rediscovering center, scared the crap out of me on the freeway....
